Lambretta (Innocenti) A 125 (m 125)

Descripción

Lambretta m (A) 125

The Lambretta 125m (A), the first scooter produced by Innocenti, was manufactured in Milan from October 1947. Until October 1948, 9669 scooters were produced in total. Overall, the 125m was a cheap and, for its time, rather quick scooter, giving a 65 kph top-speed at good consumption figures.

The construction is radical in its simplicity, consisting of two main parts: the front is made from rectangular pressed steel tube, to which the headstock and forks are attached. The rear of the scooter is made from two chrome tubes, holding the tank and ending up in the large toolbox at the rear.

The engine is an air-cooled item with 123 cc capacity and propeller-shaft drive to the rear wheel. The gears of the 3-speed gearbox are selected by foot via a rod linkage, which is one of the specialities of the A model. Suspension is via two simple springs at the front, whereas the rear is completely unsprung apart from the air in the 7 inch tires that is. The clean looks of the 125A are a result of the fact that any cables were routed through the handlebars and frame. At the same time, this is a severe problem if any of the cables have to be changed. Another interesting feature of the model A is the oil mixing can incorporated in the fuel tank cap. Rather strange from today's view is the construction of the brakes: while the brake shoes are made from steel only, the pads are fitted as liners into the brake drums.

Innocenti continuously further developed their scooter, so that there are three different versions of the 125 A. Also, there was an abundance of different colours available, which had been produced for military use. Altogether, the model A was offered in six different colour options.

125m (A) – 1st version
(up to frame no. 6.900)

Rectangular, light-brown front seat, rear seat only offered as an accessory and usually coloured black. A lock is fitted to the toolbox which also works as an ignition lock. Wheel rims are chromed as standard and fitted to the brake drums by three chromed nuts. The horn is actuated mechanically by foot. The brake pedal is at the rear righthand-side of the floorboards. The centre stand has no spring attached and has to be hooked into a small lever.

125 m (A) – 2nd version
(up to frame no. ~ 11.000)

The front saddle is now tri-angular shaped and has two springs at the rear. It is much smaller than the first version and of sand colour. The rear seat is of the same colour now, but still only available as an accessory. The toolbox is closed with a simple lever now. The mechanic horn is replaced by a 6V AC horn. A kill switch is fitted where the lever for the old horn used to be. Wheel rims are painted silver instead of chromed. The rear wheel rim has additional wheel rim nuts. The gearchange-pedal is no longer straight, but angled. From about frame no. 10000 the brake pedal is moved to the lefthand-side of the floorboards.

125 m (A) – 3rd version
(up to frame no. ~ 14.700)

The brake pedal is on the lefthand side as with the final 1000 scooters of the 2nd series. The front seat is now sprung by a single horizontal spring, the seat colour is dark brown. The centre stand is now made from cast iron and held by a spring.
