Lambretta (Innocenti) C 125

Lambretta (Innocenti) C 125

Description

Lambretta C & LC

The Lambretta Model C was produced from 1950 to 1951. The C was the first model to be officially imported into the UK, the first step into what was to become the largest market for the Lambretta scooters. Despite the short production period of the C and LC model, 130.000 scooters were built and mainly sold in Italy.

Compared to the sales figures of the A and B models, this was a huge step forward. The engine is basically the same as the model B's, air cooled with 125 cc capacity. However the engine is now a structural part of the frame and bolted directly onto the back. The rear suspension now has an additional spring with centre rod under the engine. The 3-speed gearbox is again operated by a Teleflex cable and the tried and trusted Dell'Orto MA 16 carburettor is used. Power output is 4.3 hp, giving a top speed of 70 kph.

The frame however has been changed considerably and is now made from a single tube with the petrol tank mounted under the frame loop which supports the front saddle. The toolbox is fitted onto a loop which is welded to the rear of the frame below the optional rear seat. The handlebars bear some similarity to pushbike handlebars, as the large diameter headlamp is now mounted at the middle of the headstock. At the rear, a small lens placed directly above the number plate takes care of the lighting. Front suspension is now by trailing links on both sides of the wheel.

Together with the model C, Innocenti introduced a comprehensive range of accessories, including speedometers, front embellishers, spare wheels, floor mats, grips and various systems of additional panels.

Model LC

The greatest revelation however was the LC, which was introduced shortly after the C. This was the first Lambretta with full scale legshields and panels covering the engine. The engine of the LC was fan cooled and therefore fed enough air even at a standstill. The C stands for “Lusso” (= luxury) and is a tribute to the many Lambretta customers who have been asking for better weather protection. Also the covering of the dirty and noisy engine is seen as an additional luxury, while the pillion passenger gets rear floorboards to rest his feet. Through a little hatch in the right side panel, petrol tap and carburettor can be accessed without taking the panel off.
