Original Dell'Orto float for PHBH and PHBL carburetors. The current white 9.5 g version functions identically to the older black 11 g float and can be used as a replacement.
The float, together with the float needle and float needle valve, regulates the fuel level in the float chamber. As the fuel level rises, the float is lifted and pushes the float needle into its valve seat. This shuts off the further flow of fuel. If the fuel level drops, the valve reopens and fuel can flow in again.
A properly functioning float system is crucial for a stable fuel level and, therefore, for reproducible carburetor tuning. A damaged, leaky, or stiff float can cause problems just as much as a worn or leaky float needle.
Dell’Orto used different float designs for these carburetors over the course of their production run. Some older versions are made of black plastic with a separate connecting element, while newer versions have a different design and are made of white plastic.
The following therefore applies to the Dell'Orto float type 9010.1:
| Float Type | Newer version | Older version |
|---|---|---|
| 9010.1 | 9.5 g, white | 11.0 g, black |
| 9010.2 | 6.5 g, white | 8.0 g, black |
The white 9.5-g float offered here can therefore be used as a replacement for the older black 11-g version, type 9010.1.
Within a comparable float design, the weight affects the fuel level in the float chamber. A heavier float must submerge further into the fuel before the buoyancy is sufficient to close the float needle valve. As a result, the fuel level is higher.
As a general rule, for the same float design:
However, this rule cannot simply be applied to different generations of floats with varying designs. Therefore, a direct comparison based solely on the gram weight of white and black Dell’Orto floats is not meaningful.
The fuel level is a fundamental calibration parameter of the carburetor. A change in the float or the fuel level can affect several aspects of the fuel mixture at the same time. The float weight should therefore not be used as a simple tuning component, like a main jet.
For a standard replacement, it is recommended to use the float version specified by Dell'Orto or a known, functionally equivalent successor model.
The cause does not necessarily have to be the float itself. The float needle, valve seat, contamination, or a float bearing that is difficult to move can also cause similar symptoms.

The white Dell'Orto float weighing 9.5 g is the correct functional version for float type 9010.1 and replaces the older black 11-g float. The difference in weight is due to the modified design and does not mean that the newer float produces a fundamentally different fuel level.
