Vespa P 150 X (VLX1T) – PX Series Classic up to 1980
The Vespa P 150 X with frame prefix VLX1T was produced from 1978 and marked the start of the legendary PX series – one of the most iconic and long-lasting Vespa lines. Positioned between the P 125 X and the P 200 E, the 150 X was a popular touring model, especially in Europe.
Body and Design
The P 150 X featured a self-supporting steel monocoque frame with angular legshield, rectangular headlamp and a continuous floorboard with black rubber strips. The headset was made of cast aluminium and included an angular speedometer along with light and gear controls. A glovebox integrated into the legshield was a new standard feature.
Engine and Technology
The air-cooled 2-stroke engine with 150 cc delivered about 6.6 kW (9 hp) at 5,600 rpm. Gear shifting was manual via a 4-speed twist grip. A major innovation was the maintenance-free electronic ignition. The scooter was started via kickstarter; no electric starter was available. Both front and rear used drum brakes, and the PX rolled on 10" steel wheels.
Colours and Distinctive Features
Original paint options for early P 150 X models (until 1980) included:
- Rosso Katmandù – MaxMeyer 1.298.5847
- Grigio Chiaro – MaxMeyer 1.268.8207
- Azzurro Metallizzato – MaxMeyer 1.298.0110
- Verde Vallese – MaxMeyer 1.298.8475
Standard features included black vinyl seat, plastic grips, compact taillight without reflector, and no brake light – which was not yet mandatory in earlier production years.
Collector Value and Spare Parts
The P 150 X is a favourite among restorers and classic Vespa fans. It offers robust mechanics, excellent parts availability and clear documentation. Frame prefix VLX1T is the key reference for identifying model year and part compatibility.
