The Modern Vespa: GTS, Primavera and Sprint – Roots, Evolution and Allure

Since its launch in 1946, the Vespa has stood as a symbol of Italian elegance and mobility. Modern models like the Vespa GTS, Primavera and Sprint blend the iconic design of the original Vespa with advanced technology.

The Roots of the Vespa: Birth of an Icon

The first Vespa was introduced in 1946 by Piaggio in Pontedera, Italy. Designed by aeronautical engineer Corradino D’Ascanio, it revolutionised mobility with its self-supporting steel frame, small wheels and signature wasp-waist silhouette – hence the name “Vespa” (Italian for wasp). These design elements – compact build, rounded forms and easy handling – are still visible in modern models. Originally created as a practical means of transport in the post-war era, it appealed to both men and women thanks to its affordability, cleanliness and ease of use. Evolution of Modern Vespa Models

The modern Vespa GTS, Primavera and Sprint models build on this legacy while integrating contemporary technologies. In the 1990s, Piaggio faced challenges: the PX and PK models were losing appeal, and Japanese brands like Honda were flooding the market with cutting-edge scooters. Piaggio responded by launching the “Modern Vespa” range, beginning with the ET series (ET2 and ET4) in 1996. These models combined classic styling with modern two- and four-stroke engines, laying the foundation for today’s lineup.

Vespa Primavera and Sprint

First introduced in 1968 and relaunched in 2014 as the successor to the Vespa LX, the Primavera is a symbol of youth and lightness. It features 11- or 12-inch wheels, a slim steel body and engines ranging from 50 to 150 cc. The “new” Sprint, also launched in 2014, shares the same technology but sports a more dynamic design with 12-spoke wheels. In 2017, both received 3V iGet Euro4 engines with start-stop systems to improve efficiency and comfort. In 2023, Primavera and Sprint were updated with new wheels, LED lighting and a redesigned handlebar assembly – with electric versions (Elettrica) also added to the lineup.

Vespa GTS

Launched in 2003 as the GT and later developed into the GTS, this model is the flagship for long-distance riders. With engines ranging from 125 to 310 cc (e.g. GTS 300 HPE), it offers much more power and comfort than older models. In 2014, the GTS was updated with a digital speedometer, LED indicators, ABS/ASR and a new front suspension for better handling. The 2019 “SuperTech” version introduced a 4.3-inch TFT display that supports navigation and call management via the Vespa MIA app. In 2025, the GTS 310 was launched with even more power and improved features.

Traces of the Original Vespa in Today’s Models

Today’s Vespa models retain key elements of the original: the steel body, the rounded leg shield and compact wheels. The single-sided front swingarm, a hallmark since 1946, ensures excellent manoeuvrability. The flowing lines and the iconic “Scudetto” (Piaggio logo) on the leg shield pay tribute to its origins. These elements make a Vespa instantly recognisable and set it apart from other scooters.

From City Streets to Open Roads: The Vespa’s Versatility

Vespa fans value the combination of style, practicality and individuality. The Primavera and Sprint shine in city traffic with their agility and lightness, making them ideal for commuters and younger riders. The GTS is praised for its power and stability on longer journeys and its high-end equipment – especially among touring riders. Top build quality, modern features such as LED lighting and connectivity, and the ability to customise with accessories like luggage racks or windscreens add to the appeal. Special editions like the Primavera (RED) or Racing Sixties cater to individualists. On Vespa forums, fans of the Primavera rave about the slim look and straightforward mechanics, while the GTS is appreciated for its durability and performance. The GTS, Primavera and Sprint embody the soul of the original 1946 Vespa, enhanced with state-of-the-art engineering. Piaggio’s ability to blend tradition with innovation continues to win hearts – whether in the city or on the open road.
