Introduction

Aprilia SR 50 R (2004–2014, ZD4VFD)

The Aprilia SR 50 R (ZD4VFD) is a sporty 50cc scooter produced by the Italian manufacturer Aprilia between 2004 and 2014. It belongs to the renowned SR 50 series, which has set benchmarks in design, technology, and riding fun in the scooter segment since its launch in 1992.
With the "R" designation, Aprilia introduced an updated version of the popular scooter, geared even more strongly toward sporty looks, performance, and younger riders – particularly those who can operate a 50cc vehicle with an AM or moped license.

Model History

From 2004 onward, the SR 50 R marked the next evolutionary step in the SR lineup. It was offered as a sportier variant alongside the well-known Di-Tech and standard models and featured a distinctly more aggressive design.
Key characteristics of the SR 50 R included its distinctive front with integrated dual headlights, sharp-edged body lines, and an ergonomically shaped seat – all inspired by supersport motorcycles.
Over its ten-year production span, the model was revised multiple times to meet new emissions standards and technical requirements. It became especially popular in scooter-friendly countries such as France, Spain, and Italy.

Technical Details

Engine and Performance

The SR 50 R (ZD4VFD) is powered by a liquid-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke engine with a displacement of 49 cm³. Depending on the version, the scooter was available with a classic carburetor or electronic direct injection (Di-Tech).
It produces approximately 3.5 kW (4.8 hp) at around 6,500 rpm. The top speed is limited to about 45 km/h in restricted form, while derestricted versions could reach higher speeds depending on local regulations.
Power is delivered through a continuously variable transmission (CVT), ensuring smooth acceleration and easy handling.

Chassis and Brakes

The chassis features a sturdy telescopic fork at the front and a monoshock rear suspension, providing precise handling and excellent stability – even under sporty riding conditions.
Braking is handled by a 190 mm disc brake at the front and a 140 mm drum brake at the rear. Some versions also featured a rear disc brake.
With a dry weight of approximately 91 kg and a wheelbase of around 1,290 mm, the SR 50 R is an agile urban commuter. The 13-inch wheels with 130/60-13 tires front and rear offer solid grip.

Design and Special Editions

The SR 50 R was known for its striking color and graphic schemes, including "Race Replica" versions styled after Aprilia's official racing machines.
Popular color options included "Diablo Black," "Flame Red," "Aprilia White," and limited editions with MotoGP or SBK-inspired designs.
Over the years, several special models were released, such as the "Factory" edition featuring the Di-Tech engine or enhanced design elements.
Technically and visually, the SR 50 R made a bold statement for sporty scooter riders – and remains a sought-after model on the used market today.
