Aprilia Amico 50 (1993-1995, GL/HU)

Introduction

Model History

The Aprilia Amico 50 (1993–1995, GL/HU) is a scooter from the Italian manufacturer Aprilia, produced from 1993 as an evolution of the original Amico model. It built on the success of the first Amico, introduced in 1990, and was designed to offer a reliable, compact, and affordable vehicle for urban use. The Amico 50 primarily targeted young riders and beginners looking for an agile everyday scooter. Over the years, it was released in various versions and remained a consistent part of Aprilia’s model range, reflecting the company’s transition from motorcycle production to the scooter segment.

Development and Evolution

From a historical perspective, the Aprilia Amico 50 (1993–1995, GL/HU) follows in the tradition of the original Amico, which marked Aprilia’s entry into the scooter market. Founded in 1945 by Alberto Beggio as a bicycle manufacturer, Aprilia developed into a major motorcycle brand under Ivano Beggio from the 1960s onwards. In the 1980s, a collaboration with Italian engine maker Minarelli laid the foundation for the Amico series. The post-1993 versions brought improvements over the original model (1990–1992) and introduced variants such as the Amico Sport, Amico GL, and Amico LX, which differed in design and equipment features. It represents a bridge between the early Amico models and later developments like the SR 50, with which Aprilia entered the sporty scooter market.

Technical Details

Technically, the Aprilia Amico 50 (1993–1995, GL/HU) is equipped with an air-cooled 49 cc two-stroke engine, delivering between 2.7 hp (approx. 2 kW) and 3 hp (approx. 2.2 kW), depending on version and production year. The engine is based on a Minarelli design and uses a carburetor for fuel delivery. Power is transmitted via a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) with a V-belt, allowing for easy handling. The top speed is around 45 km/h, in line with moped regulations. The frame consists of a sturdy tubular steel construction. The suspension features a leading-link front fork and a rear engine swingarm with a single shock absorber. Drum brakes are fitted to both wheels, typical for this vehicle class. With a dry weight of around 75 kg and a fuel tank capacity of 4.5 liters, the scooter is lightweight and suited for short-distance riding.

Design and Variants

The Aprilia Amico 50 (1993–1995, GL/HU) was available in a variety of colors including red, black, white, blue, and yellow, with availability varying by model year and market. These color options gave the scooter visual versatility and appeal. Several versions were released that can be considered special editions, such as the Amico Sport (1992–1993) with a sportier design, and the Amico GL (from 1994), which featured upgrades like a redesigned seat. The Amico LX (from 1995) also introduced unique styling and equipment changes. These versions mainly differed in details such as seat design, color schemes, and accessories, while the technical platform remained largely the same. Optional equipment like windshields or luggage racks allowed for further customization.
