Introduction
Aprilia Atlantic 200 (2003, ZD4SPA)
The Aprilia Atlantic 200 is a scooter from the Italian manufacturer Aprilia, launched in 2003. This model belongs to the category of midi-scooters and was developed as a versatile vehicle for urban and suburban use.
The Atlantic 200 was introduced simultaneously with the Atlantic 125 and was designed to offer riders a more powerful alternative to the smaller model while remaining compact and practical. It was part of the Atlantic series, which Aprilia established in the early 2000s to gain a foothold in the growing market for mid-sized scooters.
Model History
Historically, the Aprilia Atlantic 200 stands at the beginning of the Atlantic series, which debuted in 2003. Aprilia, founded in 1945 by Alberto Beggio as a bicycle manufacturer, transformed under Ivano Beggio from the 1960s into a motorcycle producer and began scooter production in the 1980s through collaboration with Rotax, starting with the Amico (1990).
Following models like the Scarabeo and Leonardo, Aprilia launched the Atlantic series in 2003, initially with the 125 and 200, followed by larger variants like the Atlantic 500. The Atlantic 200 marks a transition from smaller scooters to more powerful midi and maxi-scooters and demonstrates Aprilia's effort to cover various market segments, shortly before the brand was acquired by Piaggio in 2004.
Technical Details
Technically, the Aprilia Atlantic 200 is equipped with an air-cooled 198cc four-stroke engine, delivering about 13 hp (approximately 9.6 kW) at 8,000 rpm. The engine is operated via a Keihin carburetor and is coupled with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with a belt, allowing for easy operation.
The top speed is around 105 km/h. The frame consists of a sturdy steel tube construction, the suspension includes a front telescopic fork with a 35 mm diameter and a rear swingarm with an adjustable shock absorber. The braking system consists of a front disc brake and a rear drum brake. With a dry weight of about 145 kg and a tank capacity of 11 liters, the Atlantic 200 was suitable for longer distances while still offering good maneuverability.
Design and Options
The Aprilia Atlantic 200 was offered in several colors, including black, silver, and blue, with exact availability varying by market. These color options emphasized the modern and practical style of the scooter.
Official special models of the Atlantic 200 are not documented, but there were differences within the Atlantic series between the engine displacement variants (125, 200, 500), which differed in technical details and equipment. Optionally, the scooter could be equipped with accessories such as a top case or a windshield to enhance functionality, with the standard version being the focus of production.
