Introduction

Aprilia Scarabeo 50 (1993–1997, 072/081/092/094)

The Aprilia Scarabeo 50 was the first model of the legendary Scarabeo series and was produced by the Italian manufacturer Aprilia between 1993 and 1997. As an innovative large-wheeled scooter with a retro-inspired design, the Scarabeo 50 set new standards in the 50cc scooter segment.
Its styling combined classic lines with modern functionality, making it especially popular with younger riders who valued style, quality, and everyday usability.

Model History

With the launch of the Scarabeo 50 in 1993, Aprilia created a new category: the elegant large-wheeled scooter with 16-inch tires. Unlike most competitors with small wheels, the Scarabeo offered improved stability and comfort on uneven roads.
The model was produced in several versions, designated internally as 072, 081, 092, and 094, which refer to technical variations in braking systems, carburetion, cooling, and electrical configurations. Its success laid the foundation for an entire family of Scarabeo models that continues today.

Technical Details

The Scarabeo 50 is equipped with an air-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke engine with 49 cc displacement, producing between 2.5 and 4.5 hp depending on the market version and restrictions. Power is transmitted via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Top speed ranges from around 45 km/h (restricted) to about 70 km/h (unrestricted). The front suspension uses a telescopic fork, while the rear has a mono-shock absorber. Depending on the version, braking includes a front disc brake (Ø approx. 190 mm) and rear drum. Dry weight is approx. 85 kg, and the fuel tank holds about 7 liters.

Color Options and Accessories

Early Scarabeo 50 models were available in classic shades such as bordeaux red, British racing green, silver, and dark blue. High-quality paint finishes and distinctive angular styling made them instantly recognizable.
Accessories included a windshield, luggage rack, top case, and alternative seat covers. Thanks to its popularity in urban environments and among younger riders, the Scarabeo 50 was often customized – and is now considered a sought-after classic among enthusiasts.
