Introduction

Aprilia - Rally 50 AC (2004, ZD4MD0)

The Aprilia Rally 50 AC from model year 2004 (type ZD4MD0) is a revised version of the popular air-cooled two-stroke scooter from the Rally series. It combines proven technology with updated details and was a budget-friendly alternative in the 50 cc segment in many European markets.
With its solid construction, reliable engine and compact format, the Rally 50 AC was an ideal vehicle for beginners, commuters and city riders looking for easy maintenance and good spare part availability.

Model history

The 2004 model year marked the final production phase of the air-cooled Rally 50 (type MD0) before Aprilia restructured its range.
Compared to previous years, the design was slightly revised – especially the graphics and some fairing parts.
The Rally 50 AC was marketed as a simple and robust alternative to the liquid-cooled Rally LC and had established itself as a reliable everyday scooter.

Technical details

Powered by an air-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke engine with 49.3 cc displacement.
Output was around 3.2 kW (4.3 hp), depending on national homologation and restriction.
Power is transmitted via an automatic continuously variable CVT gearbox with centrifugal clutch.
The model featured both electric and kickstarter – ideal for cold days or flat batteries.
The engine met the Euro 1 standard and was known for its ease of maintenance.

Chassis and equipment

The chassis consists of a stable tubular steel frame, combined with a conventional telescopic fork at the front and a side-mounted mono shock at the rear.
The brake system uses a 190 mm disc brake at the front and a drum brake at the rear – typical in this class but adequately dimensioned.
Tyres are generously sized with 120/90‑10 front and 130/90‑10 rear, ensuring good stability on uneven city streets.
Fuel tank capacity: approx. 6 litres, dry weight: approx. 87 kg. Seat height: around 800 mm.

Design and colours

The 2004 model was offered with new, partly two-tone graphics – often combined with sporty decals and matte shades like anthracite, dark blue or black.
The sharply drawn front mask, implied windshield and angular rear section remained characteristic of the Rally series.
No official special editions are documented, but many vehicles were individually customised via styling or paintwork.

Conclusion

The Aprilia Rally 50 AC (ZD4MD0, 2004) was a classic city scooter with reliable engineering, solid features and distinctive design. It is still appreciated today as low-maintenance, durable and ideal for beginners or daily commuting – especially in urban areas.
