Introduction
Aprilia - RS 50 Tuono (2003, ZD4TSA)
The Aprilia RS 50 Tuono (model variant ZD4TSA) is a distinct version of the well-known RS 50 Tuono, launched in 2003. It is based on the classic RS 50 design but omits Aprilia’s typical upside-down forks in favour of a more conventional chassis and equipment setup.
This version was especially available in selected European markets and targeted riders looking for a sporty 50 cc motorcycle with reliable technology and low maintenance.
Model History
The ZD4TSA version was introduced in 2003 alongside other RS 50 Tuono models.
It differs only slightly in appearance but does not feature premium components like an aluminium frame or USD forks.
Instead, it uses a steel frame and traditional telescopic forks, which reduced production costs and made it more affordable.
Due to this design, the ZD4TSA became particularly popular among beginners and as an entry-level model in the 50 cc class.
Technical Details
The RS 50 Tuono ZD4TSA is equipped with an air- or liquid-cooled two-stroke single-cylinder engine with 49.9 cm³ displacement, usually carburetted.
Power output is around 2.7 hp (2.0 kW) in restricted form, with up to 7–8 hp (approx. 5.9 kW) when derestricted.
Maximum torque is approximately 5–6 Nm.
Power is transmitted via a manual 6-speed gearbox.
Top speed in derestricted form is around 90–95 km/h, depending on gearing and condition.
Chassis and Brakes
The frame consists of a steel-tube structure with a central spine.
At the front, a conventional telescopic fork is used, while the rear features a basic mono-shock.
The braking system includes a 220 mm disc brake at the front and a 180–200 mm disc at the rear.
Tyre sizes are typically 90/80‑17 front and 110/80‑17 rear.
The chassis offers sufficient stability for everyday riding and urban use.
Colour Variants
The RS 50 Tuono ZD4TSA was offered in clean, sporty colour schemes – including red-black, silver-blue and some Replica graphics.
The styling was clearly inspired by the larger Tuono models, but with simpler plastics and decals.
Many riders customised their bikes with sporty accessories, decal kits or performance upgrades such as racing exhausts.
