In 1965, the Vespa SS 180 (VSC1T) was presented as the legitimate successor to the GS 160. A vehicle that was unfortunately never officially offered in Germany, as the name abbreviation Piaggio Dtl. seemed unwelcome. In keeping with the times, the design is much more angular and no longer as frugal as its predecessor. The handlebars are trapezoidal and thus fit in well with the overall appearance and the angular rear light. The seating position has changed slightly thanks to a longer handlebar. The leg shield is more curved and narrower.
Technically, the SS 180 is otherwise pretty close to the GS 160. The basic layout of the engine has been retained. The crankshaft has been modified and is no longer a full cheek shaft, but has an upper piston pin with a diameter of 16 mm, allowing a connecting rod bearing to be used instead of the brass bushing. The displacement has increased to 180 cc thanks to the 62 mm piston and 60 mm shaft. This increased performance by approx. 10 % and the SS 180 was the first Vespa to seriously scratch the 100 km/h mark.
