Introduction

Aprilia - RS 50 (1995–1998, ZD4MM)

The Aprilia RS 50 from 1995 to 1998 (model code ZD4MM) was a sporty lightweight motorcycle with a full fairing design. Combining the sleek RS family styling with a 50 cc two-stroke engine, it targeted young riders who wanted a race-inspired look and a practical entry into the world of motorcycles.

Model History

During the 1990s, Aprilia offered the RS lineup in 50 cc versions to meet license and age regulations in various markets. The ZD4MM version followed the typical RS concept: a full fairing chassis, aggressive graphics, and the same visual appearance as the bigger RS 125. The idea was to give younger riders access to a performance-style bike without exceeding legal restrictions.

Technical Details

The RS 50 (ZD4MM) is powered by a liquid-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke engine with a displacement of around 49.9 cc. The engine produces about 4.7 kW (6.4 hp), features a 6-speed transmission and wet multi-plate clutch. Power is transmitted to the rear wheel via chain drive. Fuel delivery is typically via a Dell’Orto carburetor, matching the technology standard of the 1990s.

Chassis and Brakes

The bike uses a perimeter aluminium frame for stiffness and low weight. Front suspension is handled by a telescopic fork, while the rear uses a monoshock. Braking power comes from a 300 mm front disc with a radial caliper and a 218 mm rear disc. Tyres are sized 100/80-17 at the front and 130/70-17 at the rear, mounted on alloy wheels.

Dimensions and Weight

The seat height is approximately 820 mm, and the ready-to-ride weight is about 132 kg. The fuel tank holds around 14.5 litres, offering good range even with a small engine. Total length is about 1,965 mm, with a wheelbase of around 1,355 mm. The ergonomics support a sporty but accessible riding experience.

Color Variants

The ZD4MM version was available in classic RS-style graphics, with bold color contrasts, sponsor decals and racing stripes. Though mechanically identical to the standard RS 50, the ZD4MM stood out visually and emphasized its motorsport inspiration.
