RS 50 (2002-2003, ZD4SE0)

Introduction

Aprilia - RS 50 (2002–2003, ZD4SE0)

The Aprilia RS 50 type ZD4SE0 was produced in 2002 and 2003 and represents an evolution of the popular RS series. This small supersport bike delivers a true racing feel in the 50 cc class, combining high-quality engineering with bold design.
With features like an aluminium frame, disc brakes and a 6-speed gearbox, the RS 50 of this generation was ahead of its time and especially popular among young riders and tuning enthusiasts.

Model history

The RS 50 ZD4SE0 succeeded the ZD4TSJ model and introduced minor visual and technical updates. Most notably, the redesigned front fairing with new headlights and a silhouette even more reminiscent of Aprilia’s full-size race bikes.
The engine – still from Minarelli – remained largely unchanged but was slightly revised for emissions compliance and component updates.
Model years 2002 and 2003 were the last before a complete design overhaul in 2004.

Technical details

Powered by a water-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke engine (Minarelli AM6) with 49 cc displacement and a 6-speed manual transmission.
Power output ranges from 1.5 kW (restricted) to around 6.8 hp (derestricted), depending on exhaust and setup. The engine is known for being rev-happy, reliable, and highly tunable.
The gearbox offers precise and sporty shifting, delivering direct handling paired with the bike’s low weight.
Fuel tank capacity: approx. 12 litres.

Chassis and brakes

Chassis is based on a dual cradle aluminium frame with upside-down forks in front and a monoshock at the rear.
Braking system includes a ventilated 280 mm disc up front and a 220 mm disc at the rear – both hydraulically operated.
Tyres: 100/80-17 front, 130/70-17 rear – generously sized for excellent cornering.
Dry weight: approx. 96 kg.

Design and equipment

The RS 50 ZD4SE0 closely resembled the RSV 1000 R in design and ergonomics – with clip-on handlebars, a sporty riding position and an aggressive front end.
The analogue cockpit featured a rev counter, speedometer, coolant temperature gauge, and warning lights.
Aerodynamic bodywork and optional racing parts or sticker kits allowed many owners to personalise their bike.

Colour variants

Available in various paint schemes, including classic race colours (red/black/silver) and liveries inspired by Aprilia GP bikes.
Some dealers also offered custom graphics or racing kits. Special editions are not officially documented for ZD4SE0, though owner modifications were common.
