Introduction
Aprilia Rally 50 (1995–2004, ZD4MD–ZD4TM)
The Aprilia Rally 50 is a sporty 50cc scooter from the Italian manufacturer Aprilia, produced between 1995 and 2004. As the successor to the Amico 50 and a direct competitor to models like the Piaggio NRG and Yamaha BWs, the Rally 50 was aimed at a young, urban, and sport-oriented audience.
With its aggressive design, robust chassis, and reliable two-stroke engine, the Rally 50 proved to be a versatile option for city streets and light off-road conditions alike.
Model History
Introduced in 1995 to replace the Aprilia Amico, the Rally 50 marked the beginning of a new generation of sporty scooters for Aprilia. It was one of the first models to showcase Aprilia’s modern styling with sharp lines, twin-headlight aesthetics, and a dynamic silhouette.
Throughout its production run, the Rally 50 was offered in multiple versions – air- and liquid-cooled, with either disc or drum brakes, and in various limited-edition colors. Aprilia established itself in the sport-scooter segment with this model, before it was ultimately succeeded by the SR 50 in the early 2000s.
Technical Details
The Rally 50 features a single-cylinder, two-stroke 49cc engine, available in both air- and liquid-cooled versions. Depending on restrictions and setup, output ranges from 2.5 to 6.8 hp. Power is transmitted via a continuously variable transmission (CVT), offering smooth and responsive performance.
Top speed is around 45 km/h (restricted) and up to 80 km/h (derestricted). The frame is a tubular steel structure. Suspension includes a telescopic fork in the front and a mono-shock at the rear. Braking systems vary by version and include both drum and disc brakes. Dry weight is approx. 85–90 kg, with a fuel tank capacity of about 7 liters.
Color Options and Accessories
The Rally 50 was offered in a wide range of color options over the years – from classic shades like black and silver to striking special editions in yellow, blue, or orange. Two-tone graphics and sport-themed “R” versions were also available.
Accessories from Aprilia included luggage racks, windscreens, and custom seat covers. Thanks to its widely used Minarelli horizontal engine platform, the Rally 50 was also a favorite for tuning and customization among younger riders.
