CRIMAZ CM5 Top clutch - 5-disc smallframe system without cover spacer
The CM5 Top is the most powerful smallframe clutch in the CRIMAZ range. It combines a five-plate package with central spring technology based on the Vespa PV and ET3 clutches and remains so compact that - in combination with the CRIMAZ auxiliary shaft, CRIMAZ primary, clutch basket and matching repair kit - it fits under the standard clutch cover. An additional spacer between the engine housing and cover is not required.

Concept and design
The CM5 Top takes a different approach to classic multi-spring systems in the smallframe sector. It is based on central spring technology, as known from PV and ET3 clutches, but designed for a significantly higher torque. The heart of the system is a five-disc package, which nevertheless remains in series format in terms of height as soon as the corresponding CRIMAZ components are installed.
This results in a combination of high holding power and compact design, especially for powerful engines on the circuit or very powerful road configurations. Five brake discs provide a large friction surface, while the central spring solution reduces components and ensures clear, defined separation behavior.
Installation in the smallframe engine
Designed for Vespa Smallframe engines in conjunction with CRIMAZ auxiliary shaft, CRIMAZ primary drive, clutch basket and the appropriate repair kit. In this combination, the clutch remains so low that it fits completely under the standard clutch cover.
No spacer is required between the engine housing and the clutch cover. The housing remains unchanged on the outside, which facilitates installation in existing vehicle configurations and remains visually unobtrusive.
The very powerful central springs significantly increase the actuating force compared to standard solutions. CRIMAZ therefore recommends the use of an XL2 clutch cover or alternatively the CRIMAZ cover kit with optimized actuation (part no. 3332735).
Scope of delivery CM5 Top Kit
5 clutch facings with 2.0 mm thickness for maximum friction surface in a compact package.
4 hardened steel plates with 1.2 mm thickness as intermediate plates for clean separation and long service life.
2 reinforced central springs for high holding force with powerful motors.
Retaining ring with anti-rotation lock, matched to the CM5 Top System.
Bearing-mounted pressure plate for even pressure distribution and smooth clutch operation.
Note: Auxiliary shaft, primary drive, clutch basket, oil and small parts outside the kit mentioned are not included in the scope of delivery and must be ordered or provided separately.
Field of application
The CM5 Top is aimed at users who are looking for a clutch for very high-torque smallframe engines - from fast road scooters to circuit vehicles. The system is particularly interesting wherever high holding power and finely controllable clutch engagement are required without having to modify the engine compartment with higher clutch covers or spacers.
The design with five-disc package and central spring technology offers a technically independent solution that goes far beyond classic reinforced standard clutches and is specially tailored to performance-oriented setups.
Conclusion
The CRIMAZ CM5 Top is a high-tech clutch for demanding smallframe projects. Five friction plates in a package that fits under the standard clutch cover is particularly exciting for circuit riders and heavily built street engines. If you are prepared to accept the higher actuation force and opt for XL2 or CRIMAZ clutch covers, you get a clutch that goes a significant step beyond conventional solutions in terms of holding force and concept.
Does the CM5 Top fit under the standard clutch cover?
Yes, the CM5 Top is designed to fit under the standard Smallframe clutch cover in conjunction with the CRIMAZ auxiliary shaft, CRIMAZ primary drive, clutch basket and repair kit. A spacer between the engine housing and cover is not required in this combination.
Why is an XL2 clutch cover or the CRIMAZ cover kit recommended?
The clutch works with very strong central springs to hold even powerful engines securely. An XL2 clutch cover or the CRIMAZ cover kit (Art. 3332735) reduces the manual force and ensures easier, more controllable actuation. With a classic smallframe cover, the lever force increases significantly.
Can I also use the clutch with a different primary or secondary shaft?
The height of the CM5 Top is matched to the combination with CRIMAZ secondary shaft, primary and clutch basket. Different combinations may result in the height no longer matching the standard cover or additional adjustments may be necessary. For problem-free installation, the peripherals recommended by CRIMAZ should be used.
What engine performance is the CM5 Top intended for?
The clutch is designed for heavily built smallframe engines where conventional clutches reach their limits. A specific power rating depends on the overall setup (exhaust, gear ratio, riding weight, intended use). In practice, the CM5 Top is mainly used in sporty road vehicles and on circuit scooters.
What is special about the five-disc design?
Five friction discs in a compact design significantly increase the usable friction surface. The clutch can transmit more torque without having to work with increasingly harder springs alone. In conjunction with the central spring technology, a package is created that is tailored to high-performance setups in terms of both holding force and separation behavior.
