CRIMAZ upper tapered roller steering head bearing - Vespa Smallframe & Piaggio Zip 50 SP

With the upper steering head bearing from CRIMAZ, you can convert your Vespa Smallframe or Piaggio Zip 50 SP to a robust tapered roller bearing. Instead of simple ball bearings, a precise bearing shell and a high-quality tapered roller bearing are used here - directly inspired by motorcycle and scooter racing.

Area of application & target group

The CRIMAZ steering head bearing set is the right choice for anyone who wants to technically upgrade their steering - from clean daily scooters to sporty setups. The tapered roller bearing shows its strengths especially during hard braking maneuvers, poor road surfaces or precise line selection on the race track: the steering remainsstable, free of play and well centered.

Typical applications include Vespa Smallframe (V50, 50 N, Primavera 125, ET3, PK S/PK XL/PK XL2) and the Piaggio Zip 50 SP. In addition, the upper bearing fits many Piaggio and Gilera sports and 50 cubic models with identical head tube design, which are popular in the racing and tuning sector.

Top only - why it still makes sense

This kit specifically replaces the upper steering head bearing. This is exactly where many scooters develop notches and detents over time because the bearing is constantly subjected to braking and impact forces. The CRIMAZ set offers a much more robust solution here:

Tapered roller bearings absorb radial and axial forces more efficiently than simple ball bearings.
Better load distribution reduces running-in of the bearing seat in the frame.
Cleanly centered steering with clearly defined zero point.
Ideal if the upper bearing is worn but the lower one is still in good condition or has already been reinforced.

If you want to further optimize your suspension, you can later combine the upper CRIMAZ bearing with a suitable upgrade for the lower bearing. For many setups, however, replacing the upper bearing is already a noticeable step forward.

Mounting & installation instructions

The CRIMAZ tapered roller bearing replaces the original upper headset bearing without any changes to the frame or fork. The installation height remains close to stock, so neither the handlebar position nor the thread length on the fork tube change.

Carefully remove the old upper bearing and bearing shell from the frame and fork.
Press in the new bearing seat from CRIMAZ flush - ensure a clean, burr-free fit.
Generously fill the tapered roller bearing with high-quality bearing grease.
Set the preload of the adjusting nut so that there is no perceptible play, but the fork drops freely from stop to stop.
After the first few kilometers, check the bearing play and preload and adjust minimally if necessary.

Appearance & quality

As you would expect from CRIMAZ, this steering head bearing is also cleanly finished and precisely matched to the Piaggio/Vespa geometries. The precisely fitting bearing shell and the high-quality tapered roller bearing ensure a lasting, technical upgrade without changing the original look of the fork and steering head.

FAQ

Yes. The kit is deliberately designed for the upper position only and can be combined with an intact standard lower bearing. It is important that both bearings are adjusted without play and run cleanly.
A hydraulic or mechanical puller is ideal for inserting the new bearing shell cleanly into the frame. Alternatively, suitable drive-in mandrels and a lot of feeling can be used. It is important that the seat is not damaged or loaded at an angle.
No. The CRIMAZ tapered roller bearing is designed so that the installation height corresponds to the standard components. The fork, handlebars and steering stops remain in their original position.
Yes. A tapered roller bearing really comes into its own with heavily loaded chassis, tight dampers or racing. Careful installation with correct preload and sufficient lubrication is required.
