External ignition coil type 2 (Phenoplast/Bakelite®) for Vespa 150 and GS 150 Oldies

External high-voltage ignition coil in classic Phenoplast or Bakelite® housing for early Vespa Largeframe and GS models with breaker ignition. Technically suitable and visually coherent as a replacement if the original coil has become unreliable after decades due to cracks, moisture or insulation damage.

Features

  • External high-voltage ignition coil (type 2) for contact breaker ignitions
  • Housing in typical Phenoplast or Bakelite® look
  • Direct replacement in the original installation position without conversion of the electrics
  • Suitable for numerous Vespa 150 Wideframe and Vespa GS 150 models
  • Corresponds to Piaggio reference 022692

Material and technology

The ignition coils of this generation are located on the outside of the vehicle and are exposed to vibrations, temperature changes and the weather for decades. The housing is made of phenoplast, an early fully synthetic duroplast, often referred to colloquially as Bakelite®. The material is electrically insulating and heat-resistant, but can become brittle and develop hairline cracks with age. This leads to leakage currents, misfiring or complete ignition failure.

The coil offered here is a one-to-one replacement for the original Phenoplast or Bakelite® coil on the models in question. It is fitted to the existing mounting points and electrically connected in the same way as the original. Replacement is particularly recommended for engine revisions and restorations in order to restore the ignition system to a defined and reliable condition.

FAQ: External ignition coil type 2

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if my old ignition coil is faulty?
Typical symptoms are sporadic misfiring, poor cold starting, spark breakage in wet conditions or a complete lack of spark. Visible cracks in the Phenoplast or Bakelite® housing are a clear indication that the coil should be replaced.
Do I have to make any changes to the electrics for installation?
No. The coil is intended as a direct replacement and is fitted to the original mounting points. The connections are the same as for the standard outer coil, so the rest of the ignition system remains unchanged.
Can I also use the coil with electronic ignition?
This version is designed for contact breaker ignitions. Other high-voltage coils are generally required for retrofitted electronic systems. For such conversions, please observe the specifications of the respective ignition system.
What should I bear in mind when removing the old coil?
Phenoplast or Bakelite® can be very brittle after many years and break when the screws are loosened. It is best to work carefully and remove any fragments directly so that they do not remain in the frame or in the electrical system area.
Should I replace the ignition cable and spark plug connector at the same time?
It definitely makes sense. If the coil is already that old, the ignition cable and spark plug connector are usually similarly aged. New components ensure that the ignition spark reaches the spark plug cleanly and that the potential of the new coil is fully utilized.
