Sometimes you do not need additional engine power to make a Vespa faster. The POLINI Z=44 tone wheel takes a smarter approach: it specifically modifies the speed signal at the rear wheel, allowing the available performance to be used more effectively. Depending on the vehicle and setup, this can provide up to approximately 10 km/h more actual top speed – without modifying the cylinder, fuel injection or internal engine components.
Typical POLINI: this performance upgrade combines a technically simple idea with a noticeable effect. Instead of placing additional load on the engine, the Z=44 sensor ring works exactly where the vehicle electronics detect wheel speed. A small component for riders who know that performance does not always have to begin with more power.
The tone wheel acts as a pulse generator for the ABS sensor. As the rear wheel rotates, the evenly arranged windows pass the sensor and generate the signals from which the vehicle electronics determine wheel speed. This information plays an important role in systems including ABS, ASR and vehicle speed detection.
POLINI uses 44 windows for this performance version. The modified spacing influences the wheel speed detected by the system and therefore the speed signal. The objective is not to generate more engine power, but to make smarter use of the performance reserves already available.
Especially on powerful Vespa GTS HPE models, the speedometer can indicate significantly more than the actual road speed. While the Vespa is really travelling at approximately 120 km/h, the display may already show around 130 km/h. The electronic speed limiter can intervene within this range.
The POLINI Z=44 modifies the signal detection so that the indicated speed can move closer to the actual road speed. As a result, the speed range relevant to the electronic limiter is reached correspondingly later.
POLINI specifies a possible increase in top speed of up to approximately 10 km/h for the Phonic Wheel. The important point: the tone wheel does not generate additional engine power. Instead, it allows the power already available to be used across a wider actual speed range.
The actual maximum speed ultimately achievable therefore still depends on the vehicle. Engine power, variator setup, rider weight, wind, road conditions and other factors determine how far the Vespa can actually accelerate.
The particular appeal of this solution lies in its simplicity: the engine remains mechanically untouched. The cylinder, piston, valve train and fuel injection system do not need to be modified for the tone wheel to function. The sensor ring itself therefore does not create any additional mechanical load on the internal engine components.
At the same time, the modification remains reversible. Reinstalling the standard tone wheel restores the original configuration.
Visually, the POLINI tone wheel is equally focused on its purpose. The silver finish underlines its technical and functional character, while the large open inner section and rectangular sensor windows arranged around the circumference create a consistently purpose-driven design.
The product images show five mounting points. Five matching mounting screws are also included. This means the POLINI sensor ring comes with the required fasteners for installation.
On vehicles from Euro 5+ onwards, a tone wheel with the same number of windows must also be installed on the front wheel. If the POLINI Z=44 with 44 windows is used at the rear, the front tone wheel must therefore also have 44 windows. On these vehicles, the front and rear sensor rings must be matched in terms of the number of windows.
After replacing the tone wheel, the ASR must be recalibrated on appropriately equipped vehicles. This step is required to complete the conversion correctly and adapt the vehicle electronics to the modified configuration.
The actual difference on an individual vehicle is best verified with a GPS measurement. Recording the actual speed before and after installation under conditions that are as comparable as possible makes it possible to see directly how the Z=44 tone wheel affects the speed signal and achievable top speed.
More speed does not automatically have to mean more displacement or greater mechanical stress on the engine. The POLINI Z=44 takes a different route: it works with the electronic speed detection to unlock performance that may already be available in the vehicle. A technically focused upgrade with genuine Italian racing DNA – for Vespa riders who want to make purposeful use of every detail in their setup.
