RS 50 Tuono (2003-2004, ZD4SEA)

Introduction

Aprilia - RS 50 Tuono (2003–2004, ZD4SEA)

The Aprilia RS 50 Tuono (model variant ZD4SEA) is the streetfighter version of the well-known RS 50 from the years 2003 to 2004. It combines sporty performance with a more upright riding concept – ideal for young riders who want an aggressive naked bike design in the 50 cc segment.
With the Tuono version, Aprilia responded to the trend for sporty naked bikes and offered an alternative to the fully faired RS 50 without compromising on technology or dynamics. Despite its 50 cc classification, the Tuono maintained a full-size sportbike look.

Model History

The RS 50 Tuono was introduced in 2003 and was technically based on the existing RS 50 platform. In contrast to the classic RS 50, the Tuono version received a wider handlebar, a taller front fairing with a mini windshield, and modified ergonomics. The aim was to improve everyday usability without abandoning the sporty concept. The model remained in the lineup only until 2004 and was produced in relatively small numbers, making it a sought-after machine among collectors today.

Technical Details

The RS 50 Tuono is powered by a liquid-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke engine with 49.9 cm³ displacement. Output in restricted form is around 2.7 hp (2.0 kW), with up to 8 hp (5.9 kW) possible when derestricted. Maximum torque is approximately 5–7 Nm, depending on setup and tuning. Power is transmitted via a manual 6-speed gearbox. Top speed in the derestricted version is estimated at around 90–100 km/h. Many owners use the bike as a base for light tuning or track day use on closed circuits.

Chassis and Brakes

The chassis is based on a rigid aluminium twin-spar frame, just like the fully faired RS 50. At the front, an upside-down fork is used, while the rear features a monoshock with progressive linkage. The braking system includes a 280 mm disc brake at the front and a 220 mm disc brake at the rear. Tire sizes are 110/80‑17 front and 130/70‑17 rear. These components provide precise handling and above-average stability for a 50 cc bike.

Color Variants

The RS 50 Tuono was available in striking color schemes – including matte black, silver with red highlights, and various replica designs. Graphics varied depending on model year and market. Many owners upgraded their bikes with accessories such as performance exhausts, custom indicators or racing-style decal kits. The visual identity was strongly influenced by Aprilia’s larger RSV models, giving the Tuono a grown-up and aggressive appearance.
