Piaggio 3-Shoe Clutch – Vespa GTS 125, GTS Super 125, Piaggio Medley 125–150

Genuine Piaggio centrifugal clutch with three clutch shoes for Vespa GTS and GTS Super 125 as well as selected Piaggio and Aprilia models. The complete clutch assembly with original part number CM288502 is designed for the automatic CVT transmission and is mounted on the driven pulley.

As a speed-dependent component, the clutch automatically engages and disengages the drivetrain. It connects the transmission to the clutch bell when pulling away and interrupts power transmission once the engine speed drops sufficiently.

Construction and component features

The Piaggio CM288502 clutch features three clutch shoes evenly distributed around its circumference. The shoe bodies have a silver-coloured finish and are fitted with dark grey friction linings on their outer surfaces. These form the contact surfaces with the inside of the clutch bell.

One side of the clutch features a triangular-shaped metal plate with three clearly visible mounting points. Beneath it is a round, dark metal plate with a central mount. The mount has a flattened inner profile for positive positioning.

On the opposite side is an almost completely enclosed dark grey carrier plate with several openings of different sizes. The three pivot points of the clutch shoes are also visible on this side.

The return springs are positioned between the clutch shoes. Their attachment points can be seen in the lateral recesses of the shoe bodies. Embossed markings are also visible on the silver-coloured components.

How the centrifugal clutch works

The clutch operates without separate input from the rider. At idle speed, the return springs hold the clutch shoes in their initial position. In this state, there is no frictional engagement between the friction linings and the clutch bell.

As the speed of the driven pulley increases, centrifugal force causes the clutch shoes to move outwards. The friction linings make contact with the inner surface of the clutch bell and transfer torque to the final drive.

When the speed drops, the springs pull the clutch shoes back into their initial position. This automatically disengages the power transmission.

Genuine replacement part and vehicle application

The clutch carries Piaggio original part number CM288502 and is supplied as a complete centrifugal clutch. It is intended to replace the corresponding standard clutch assembly.

Application is determined by the original part number and the specific vehicle version. As different CVT components may be used within the same model range, compatibility should be checked against the existing component or the Piaggio spare parts catalogue before ordering.

Replacement instructions

Before installation, the clutch bell should be inspected for scoring, discolouration caused by overheating and excessive wear. The driven pulley and other components of the CVT transmission should also be checked.

The friction linings of the clutch shoes and the inner running surface of the clutch bell must be clean and free from oil and grease.

Suitable holding tools and the tightening torques specified by the vehicle manufacturer must be used during installation. Work on the clutch assembly should be carried out in accordance with Piaggio workshop specifications.
