The Vespa crankshaft is one of the most sensitive and fundamental components of this type of power unit, as it must both control the movements of the connecting rod and piston and regulate the intake using the timing system.
The Malossi technical department has devoted all its attention to precisely these two aspects, creating two versions of crankshafts and developing new solutions of high technical value, starting with the choice of materials, which are, as always, of the highest quality.
All Malossi crankshafts for Vespa are made of hardened and vacuum-melted steel of aeronautical quality, a material that is highly resistant to scratches, guaranteed by the certifications required by strict Malossi specifications. The connecting rod with viper head has been carefully designed to support maximum weight and guarantee the required strength.
Not even the smallest detail has been overlooked. Malossi's technicians have in fact been able to significantly increase the resistance using a finer thread by intervening on the thread of the axle on the drive side of the crankshafts. The position of the key has also been revised both in size and shape to avoid damaging the thread and to contribute to resistance with a modern solution. The crankshafts are equipped with special nuts that are much more resistant in order to benefit from the highest resistance offered by the tightest thread.
SHAFT FOR HOUSING WITH ROTARY VALVE
In the rotary valve motor version, the suction phase is created inside the back, in the circular mass structure itself, which has a remarkable inward weld and a smooth external profile. This innovative choice has made it possible to obtain a unique shape capable of achieving extremely effective fluid dynamics.
Such considerable welds have always been one of the most delicate points of Vespa crankshafts when it comes to achieving the right balance. Malossi has solved this problem by inserting tungsten inserts into the engine shaft, which act as counterweights to increase the stability of the shaft itself.
