Woodruff key / half-moon wedge Piaggio original shape with typical Piaggio radii

Suitable for many Vespa models on the alternator side or clutch side as well as for numerous later Piaggio, Gilera, Aprilia, Derbi and LML vehicles.

The original Piaggio diaphragm spring, commonly known as a half-moon wedge, differs in design from standardized DIN versions. Piaggio uses larger radii, which means that the diaphragm spring can be inserted more cleanly and works much more comfortably during installation. This shape is often the better choice than a rigid standard solution from the industrial sector, especially for original Vespa engines.

Original Piaggio shape Larger radii easier installation Vespa and Piaggio vehicles

Why the original Piaggio shape makes sense

deviates from the DIN standard: the radii are larger than those of standard woodruff keys
Easier installation: the woodruff key fits more neatly into the groove and counterpart
more suitable for original components: especially with classic Vespa crankshafts and pole wheels, the Piaggio shape is usually the more suitable solution

Important information on the function of the Woodruff key

A Woodruff key is not designed to transmit drive forces. It is only used to fix and position the components in relation to each other.

The actual force transmission takes place via the frictional connection between the components
This frictional connection is created via the correct tightening torque
In addition, a cone, if present, provides the actual connection

Does not fit

This Woodruff key does not fit:
Vespa Rally 180
Vespa Rally 200 with Femsatronic
Vespa GS160
Vespa SS180

Fitting instructions

A Woodruff key must sit properly in the groove and must not tilt. The correct tightening torque of the connected components is then crucial for operational safety.

Conclusion

The original Piaggio Woodruff key is more than just a simple half-moon wedge. Thanks to its shape, which differs from the DIN standard with larger radii, it can be fitted cleanly and fits better with many original Piaggio components. It remains important: The Woodruff key is positioned - the cone and correct tightening torque provide the frictional connection.
