Engine case LML Star / Stella 150 2T reed intake, also for Vespa PX

150cc 2-stroke engine case on PX basis with reed valve intake - interesting basis for powerful touring engines, but without available original LML intake components.

This LML Star / Stella 150 2T engine case is based on the design of the Vespa PX150 engine, but has been further developed by LML with a reed intake. Important for the assembly: The original Vespa SI carburetor sump cannot be used here. LML had planned its own carburetor sump and its own diaphragm for this engine type - however, both components are no longer available. This makes the housing particularly suitable as a basis for individual reed valve setups, for example with reed valve sets from MRP for use with a PHBH28 or comparable carburetors.

Important note on condition

This item is offered as a sale item. The sealing surfaces are not always perfect and the housing should be checked carefully before assembly. Minor reworking may be necessary depending on the specimen.

Check sealing surfaces: Check cylinder base, housing halves, carburetor sump and other contact surfaces
Reworking possible: individual areas may require slight planning, deburring or adjustment
Check threads and fits: check all threads, bearing seats, sealing surfaces and bores before final engine assembly
for experienced mechanics: recommended for engine builders who always measure and prepare housings before assembly

What makes the LML 2T housing interesting

Diaphragm inlet ex works: no classic rotary valve sealing surface required
PX-compatible base: suitable for many Vespa PX setups
Basis for external reed valve setups: e.g. with MRP reed valve set and PHBH28 or comparable carburetors
Inconspicuous touring engine possible: depending on the intake concept and peripherals, powerful and suitable for everyday use
Elestart prepared: can be fitted with Elestart components, but does not have to be

Membrane intake: original LML intake parts no longer available

The diaphragm intake is the main difference to the classic PX rotary valve engine. However, the original Vespa SI carburetor sump cannot simply be used on this housing. LML had provided its own flat carburetor sump and diaphragm for this purpose. Both parts are no longer available. For a rebuild, we therefore recommend an alternative diaphragm system, for example from MRP, in conjunction with a Dell'Orto PHBH28 or a comparable carburetor.

Prepared for Elestart

The engine housing is prepared to accept an Elestart engine. The electric starter can be used, but does not have to be installed. If an Elestart is not used, appropriate cover plates can be used to cleanly seal the prepared areas.

Example of a strong touring concept

This LML housing can be used as the basis for a pleasant to ride, powerful and economical touring engine. As original LML intake components are no longer available, the intake tract should be planned directly with a suitable diaphragm system.

Crankshaft: 60 mm full cheek
Intake: alternative reed valve set, e.g. MRP
Carburetor: Dell'Orto PHBH28 or comparable carburetor
Cylinder: BGM177 or comparable 177 cc touring setup
Gearbox: PX125-200 Lusso gearbox
Primary: sufficiently long gear reduction, at least 23/65 teeth
Exhaust: BGM BigBox Touring or Polini Box

Smooth running thanks to full cheek and diaphragm

In combination with a 60 mm full cheek shaft, the result is a very quiet and high-torque engine. The high specific weight and smooth running of the full cheek support a superior engine character with low vibrations. The diaphragm intake also ensures a very wide usable speed range.

In practice, a suitably constructed engine with this concept can run very smoothly and with high torque. However, the actual power delivery depends heavily on the reed set, carburetor, cylinder, exhaust and tuning used. The engine housing itself does not necessarily have to be machined for many touring setups, but should be carefully checked before assembly and reworked if necessary.

Note on engine construction

Even if the housing is a very good basis for touring engines, it should not be installed directly without being checked. The sealing surfaces, bearing seats, threads, stud bolt positions, diaphragm area and carburetor sump support must be carefully checked before assembly and reworked if necessary.

Conclusion

The LML Star / Stella 150 2T engine case is an interesting basis for powerful PX touring engines with reed valve intake suitable for everyday use. However, it must be taken into account that the original Vespa SI carburetor sump does not fit and the special LML intake parts are no longer available. It therefore makes sense to use an alternative reed set, for example from MRP, and a PHBH28 or comparable carburetor. Due to the sale condition, the housing is expressly not an untested plug-and-play part: sealing surfaces, fits and threads should be checked before assembly and reworked if necessary.

FAQ about the LML Star / Stella 150 2T engine case

Yes, the housing is based on the PX150 engine architecture and is also suitable for corresponding Vespa PX bodies. Details such as add-on parts, Elestart, carburetor sump and peripherals must match the respective vehicle.
No. The original Vespa SI carburetor sump cannot be used on this housing. LML had its own carburetor sump and diaphragm for this engine type, but both are no longer available. Alternatively, diaphragm sets e.g. from MRP with PHBH28 or comparable carburetors can be used.
The sealing surfaces are not perfect in every case and the housing may need reworking here and there. It must therefore be checked carefully before installation.
For a proven touring concept with 60 mm full cheek, carbon diaphragm plates and BGM177, no massive housing machining is necessary. Regardless of this, sealing surfaces, fits and clearances must be checked before assembly.
