Electronic ignition YGROS ROAD by VAPE for Vespa GS160 and SS180
12V AC - 110 Watt - Static (fixed) ignition timing
For SS180 (VSC1T) with magneto ignition: can be used directly as a modern AC system
For GS160/GS/4 with 6V battery ignition: can be converted - the original DC/6V concept is replaced by a modern system (AC or optional DC)
Mandatory: new wiring harness (central controller, new consumer assignment, old wiring harnesses mostly dilapidated)

Ignition YGROS ROAD by VAPE - Vespa GS160 (VSB1T) and SS180 (VSC1T)

The YGROS ROAD by VAPE is a modern electronic ignition that converts the classic GS/SS electrics to a contemporary system. The version described here works as a 12V AC system with 110 W and static (fixed) ignition timing.

Important: GS160 and GS/4 models with original 6V battery ignition can also be converted to this system - but then not as a "re-use" of the old DC logic, but as a consistent system change to a modern on-board electrical system.

YGROS ROAD VAPE 12V AC 110 W Static ignition timing GS160 SS180

Character and area of application (AC version)

Modern 12V AC system with central controller - robust solution without battery.
110 W power as the basis for stable on-board voltage and light suitable for everyday use.
Static ignition timing: simple, easy-to-understand basic setting.
Suitable for SS180 (magneto ignition) and GS160/GS/4 (also battery ignition) as a complete system change.

Key technical data

Voltage: 12V
Current type: AC (alternating current)
Power: 110 W
Ignition timing: static (fixed)
Installation: Align base plate, set ignition timing and flash off

Info box and tuning tip: GS160/GS/4 crankshaft cones (1st series vs. 2nd series)

There is an important design difference between the GS160 and GS/4: 1st series with a small cone (Ø19 mm) and 2nd series with a larger cone (Ø21 mm). The 21 mm cone corresponds to the level of the SS180 and is considered the more stable base.

Tip for engine revision: If you need a new crankshaft for a 1st series engine anyway, it is worth changing to the more stable 2nd series type with Ø21 mm cone.
Additional advantage: The 2nd series type typically uses a needle bearing instead of a bronze plain bearing bush on the small connecting rod eye - this is better suited to more demanding setups in terms of temperature and speed.

Note: For mixed components (engine/polewheel/cone), always check the fit and flash the ignition timing after installation.

Important: A new wiring harness is always mandatory (AC and DC)

Regardless of the system selected (AC or DC): A new wiring harness is always required for a clean conversion. The original 6V electrics are not designed for a centralized regulator system - and in most vehicles, the cables are also brittle due to age, corroded or have already been repaired several times.

No "compatibility" with original 6V DC battery ignition: Even a modern DC system is not a plug-and-play replacement for the original 6V DC concept.
AC is the simple solution: runs without a battery - fewer components, fewer sources of error.
DC offers more convenience: constant light intensity (not speed-dependent), light even when the engine is not running, battery as a buffer for DC consumers (e.g. LED headlights, USB, sat nav).

Suitable for

Vespa GS160 (VSB1T, from chassis 00360098-)
Vespa SS180 (VSC1T)

Note: For GS160/GS/4, please also check the cone type (Ø19/Ø21). The electrical conversion is always carried out with a new wiring harness.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

Yes. The conversion is possible, but as a complete system change: The original 6V battery concept is replaced by a modern on-board electrical system. A new wiring harness is mandatory for the conversion so that the regulator, consumer and switch-off logic can be properly installed.
Because it does not require a battery. This reduces the number of components and sources of error. However, the light intensity - as is usual with AC systems - remains speed-dependent to a certain extent.
More convenience thanks to the battery buffer: constant light intensity, light even when the engine is not running, and more reserves for DC consumers such as LED headlights, USB ports or chargers. A new wiring harness is also mandatory here - a modern DC system is not compatible with the original 6V DC battery system.

Conclusion

YGROS ROAD by VAPE consistently modernizes the GS160 and SS180 to a contemporary system. GS160/GS/4 with battery ignition can also be converted - then as a complete change to a new on-board electrical system. A new wiring harness is always mandatory, regardless of whether you use AC or an optional DC solution. If you are overhauling a 1st series GS160/GS/4 engine and replacing the crankshaft, switching to the 2nd series type (Ø21 mm cone, needle bearing on the connecting rod) generally provides a more stable basis.
