The locking system of modern Vespa models includes effective theft protection.
It consists of the ECU, master key (brown), slave key (black), and code card.
NOTE: If no vehicle keys are available, the ECU must be replaced. It is programmed once with the code stored in the master key (burned in). After that, the ECU cannot be reprogrammed!
In some models (250–300cc), the ECU is combined with the throttle control. As a result, the repair costs are disproportionately high*. Always store at least one key (master key) in a safe place. The master key can teach new keys. That means an unlimited number of duplicates can be created with it.
The master key of this lock set can only be used together with a new ECU.
If the original master key is still available, its internal RFID chip can be transferred to a new key.
*Some specialized companies are able to read out the existing ECU and transfer the code to a new key. Please search Google for “clone Vespa key”.

Code Card
The code card contains only the mechanical information needed to reproduce the key (groove pattern).
The electronic transponder code is not stored on the CODECARD.
ECU
The permanently installed ECU receives signals from the key via transponder (mounted around the ignition switch inside the vehicle). If the signal code matches, the ECU enables the ignition.
Black/Blue Key (slave key)
The black or blue key is the main ignition key and contains all the information for the ECU. A copied key can initially only turn the ignition and unlock the steering lock. To disable the immobilizer and start the scooter, this key must be programmed using the red key. This is done using the brown master key.
Brown Key (master key)
The thick brown key is the so-called master key. It contains the CODE that matches the CDI. The ECU and keys communicate wirelessly.
The master key can transfer its data to the ‘regular’ black key (so-called pairing or learning). The master key is the core element of the theft protection system. If it is lost, a new ECU must be installed.
