QUALITY VAPE
The VAPE ignition is a modern ignition system including alternator. Manufactured entirely in Europe (Czech Republic) from high-quality materials, every single ignition is 100% function-tested. The resulting reliability is legendary, making it ideal for higher performance engines. VAPE ignitions have been firmly established in the moped/motorcycle sector for decades and have become indispensable, especially in the Simson sector.
CONVERSION CONTACT IGNITION
The VAPE replaces the complete contact ignition 100% and at the same time provides a modern and powerful 12Volt alternator. The strong permanent magnets of the one-piece pole wheel enable a high ignition current even at low engine speeds and a bright light at idle. The engine therefore starts much better, as the high ignition current also easily compensates for increased resistance (e.g. an oily spark plug or too much fuel in the crankcase). The significantly higher light output, even at low engine speeds, provides an additional major safety advantage in road traffic. What's more, the ignition is maintenance-free forever. No more adjusting contacts, no more replacing a capacitor. Just ride when you want to.
UPGRADE V50/PK
We also recommend our VAPE ignition especially for converting older Vespa models that still had a contact ignition ex works. For Vespa Smallframe models, these are all vehicles from 1966 onwards: V50, 50 Special, PV (Primavera), SS50, SR50, 50 Sprinter, V90, SS90, 90 Racer and the corresponding Motovespa Smallframe models. In addition to the contact ignition, these engines have a crankshaft with a small alternator cone (recognizable by the shaft seal ring with Ø19mm and the pole wheel nut with M10 thread). With a larger engine tuning (133cc and more), this is quickly overwhelmed by the high weight of the standard Piaggio pole wheel. Converting to the VAPE ignition with its significantly lighter pole wheel (approx. 1400 grams) not only makes the engine much more agile, it also significantly reduces the load on the crankshaft. If you want to go one step further in terms of reliability, use the crankshaft of the PK XL models with a Ø20mm crankshaft stub. This is significantly more stable and, together with our VAPE ignition, represents the 'ideal solution' for a conversion. If you have already carried out such a conversion on your V50/PV, simply use the VAPE set for the PK engines. In this case, the pole wheel is directly suitable for the larger crankshaft of the PK, the rest of the components are identical. Converting to a VAPE provides massively more light output, especially on older vehicles, and powerful 60/55 watt halogen bulbs or alternative chargers for cell phones and the like can also be used without any problems. The flywheel and pole wheel are also lighter and perfectly balanced. An important factor in motor tuning.
WIRINGHARM
Formerly contact-controlled ignitions should be converted to a new wiring harness for various reasons. In most cases, the old wiring harness is already damaged and has increased resistance due to corroded copper wires. In addition, the original wiring harness in older vehicles (with formerly self-regulating electrics) is not suitable for a power supply via a central cable. We naturally stock suitable conversion wiring harnesses in our store. These are also very easy to connect and perfectly complement the conversion to a new vehicle electrical system.
AC/DC?
All Vespa alternators are designed ex works for a so-called AC (alternating current) power supply. As soon as the engine is running, current is generated and passed directly to the consumers (lamps). Our VAPE ignition is also supplied as an AC system. However, it can be converted to a so-called DC (direct current) system by simply replacing the voltage regulator (the stator is 'earth-free' and only becomes DC or AC through the wiring). The entire current from the alternator is fed into a battery via a so-called full-wave regulator. This supplies all consumers (lights, horn, indicators etc.). The advantage is that a power supply is available even when the engine is not running.
IGNITION ADVANCE?
The VAPE ignition is supplied by us with a CDI with so-called static ignition timing. In contrast to four-stroke engines, two-stroke engines do not require dynamic adjustment due to the gas-dynamic effects in the combustion chamber. The required ignition angle remains almost linear, despite increasing engine speed, due to the mixture burning through faster and faster. Only absolute racing engines, whose usable speed range only begins above 6000 rpm, can possibly benefit from an adjustment. For almost all scooter engines used on the road, however, dynamic ignition advance is more of a disadvantage. The high ignition angle in the lower range makes the engine run rough and out of round, and the ignition angle decreasing with increasing engine speed often tends to reduce performance. For these reasons, we use a CDI with static ignition timing. This harmonizes perfectly with standard engines as well as engines with greatly increased performance. However, our VAPE ignition can of course be equipped with a dynamically adjustable CDI.
INSTALLATION/IGNITION ADJUSTMENT
A great feature of our VAPE ignition is the fact that it is adjusted without the so-called 'flash-off', i.e. without a strobe light. The VAPE conversion ignition system is therefore easy to install and can be fitted without special tools. Thanks to our installation instructions (in printed form), installation is no problem at all, even for technically experienced laymen.
PILOTWHEEL/FAN WHEEL
The VAPE ignition always has the same pinion (starting from the cone matched to the engine, including installation height). As in the original, it has only one slot for positioning on the crankshaft. Incorrect installation is therefore impossible. The flywheel mass matching the engine concept is produced via the impeller. This has the advantage that the flywheel mass can only be changed by replacing the impeller. The impeller supplied by us is CNC-machined from solid aluminum. It fits the respective engine type perfectly and has an optimized impeller geometry. This guarantees maximum cooling capacity with the best performance. Pole wheel and impeller are meticulously balanced.
