Intake Manifold / Diaphragm Intake Manifold BGM PRO for Repairing Defective Rotary Valve Engine Housings

The solution for damaged rotary valve surfaces: a diaphragm intake manifold mounted below the SI carburetor for Vespa Largeframe engines.

The BGM PRO diaphragm intake manifold is primarily a technically sound repair solution for defective large-frame engine cases. If the rotary valve sealing surface is worn, damaged, improperly reworked, or has simply become unusable, the engine case does not have to be discarded. The diaphragm box replaces the original crankshaft-driven intake function and makes even engine cases with damaged rotary valves usable again —while retaining the classic SI carburetor.

The real purpose: saving the engine housing instead of replacing it

This is precisely where the main benefit of this component lies: making defective rotary valve housings roadworthy again. Instead of laboriously welding, reaming, or completely replacing the engine housing, the diaphragm box takes over the fuel mixture control.

Ideal for worn rotary valve surfaces: the damaged sealing surface loses its function—and with it, the problem
Useful for reworked housings: even intake surfaces that are severely worn or poorly milled can still be used
A practical repair solution: the SI carburetor can continue to be used, and the appearance remains unobtrusive
Also useful for retrofitting: a housing that was originally milled for a diaphragm can once again be used with an SI carburetor

Function and Application

The diaphragm box is mounted directly beneath the carburetor bowl and replaces the standard rotary valve inlet on the engine housing. The fuel-air mixture is then no longer controlled via the crankshaft, but via the integrated diaphragm. As a result, the quality of the original rotary valve surface is no longer critical to the engine’s operation.

Installation position is directly beneath the carburetor bowl, allowing continued use of the existing SI carburetor.
Crank shaft control of the intake is completely eliminated, so a damaged rotary valve surface is no longer a disqualifying factor.
Particularly useful for engines with a worn intake surface, poorly executed repairs, or a significantly enlarged intake area.

Installation and Adjustment

The diaphragm housing is bolted into place under the carburetor bowl in place of the original intake mechanism. As a plug-and-play solution, it already provides a clean repair option for defective rotary valve housings. Those who wish to tap into additional performance potential can further open the intake area in the engine housing to match the diaphragm channel.

Package includes gaskets. Two longer M7 stud bolts are required for mounting. If these are not available, they must be ordered separately as needed. Alternatively, the stud bolts from the shift lock can be used.
Even without additional milling work, the system is already a functional repair solution. Widening the intake area serves solely to increase performance.
For engines with carburetor mounting via hex socket screws, an additional mounting kit is required (Part No. 5250049K, sold separately).

Repair solution first, tuning option later

Important to note: This intake manifold is not just a tuning part, but above all a very clever repair solution for large-frame casings with a defective rotary valve. A performance increase is not automatically the goal without further modification. The main advantage is that a damaged engine housing can once again be used in a technically sound manner and for everyday purposes.

Compatibility and Limitations

The diaphragm housing is designed for Vespa Largeframe engines with Dell’Orto SI carburetors and a long sealing surface on the carburetor bowl. The decisive factor is the usable width of the sealing surface between the mounting screws.

Suitable for Largeframe engines with rotary valve control and SI carburetors from approximately 1962 onward with a long sealing surface.
Not suitable for Vespa T5 and certain PX80-150 engines with a short sealing surface—i.e., less than approximately 60 mm between the carburetor mounting holes.
Cannot be used in conjunction with a stock oil pump. Operation is typically via mixture lubrication.

Scope of Delivery

  • CNC-milled diaphragm box for installation under the carburetor bowl
  • Matching gaskets for installation

FAQ: Diaphragm Box Under the Carburetor Bowl for Vespa Largeframe

Primarily for repairing defective rotary valve engine housings. If the rotary valve surface is damaged or unusable, the diaphragm takes over intake control and the housing can continue to be used.
For Vespa Largeframe engines with rotary valve control and Dell’Orto SI carburetors, typically models from around 1962 onward with a long sealing surface on the carburetor bowl. T5 engines, as well as some PX80-150 engines with a short sealing surface, are not compatible due to their design.
Not strictly necessary for repair purposes alone. The kit can restore a defective rotary valve housing to working order without any milling work. Machining the intake area serves only to increase the cross-sectional area and thus boost performance.
No. Due to the design and the installation location beneath the carburetor bowl, use with a stock oil pump is not intended. Operation typically relies on conventional mixture lubrication.
Especially when the rotary valve is defective and you want to avoid repairs involving welding or extensive housing modifications. The system is also useful when a housing milled for a diaphragm carburetor is to be used again with SI carburetors.
