Milling template rotary valve - bgm PRO intake optimization for Piaggio Ciao, Boss & Co.

With the bgm PRO milling template, you can get more torque and power from your Piaggio moped - clean, controlled and reliable. Specially developed for all classic Piaggio 50cc rotary valve engines such as Ciao, Boss, Boxer, Bravo, PX, Grillo, SI and Superbravo, it allows you to precisely optimize the intake - without risk to the sensitive sealing surface.

Note: The casting may vary slightly from engine to engine, so please always check before milling that the template is positioned in such a way that at least 1 mm of sealing surface is retained all round.

Why optimize the intake at all?

Many engines - especially those from Switzerland or Germany - are heavily throttled ex works. Moped engines in particular (25 km/h approval) are downright castrated in comparison to moped engines (50 km/h). The intake is one of the biggest bottlenecks. The bgm PRO template provides you with a simple tool to eliminate this bottleneck:

More torque in everyday use: extended timing window ensures better filling level

✅ S uitable for touring & reliable: No wild milling actions, but coordinated expansion

Safe & clearly defined: The boundaries of the template protect the sealing surface

✅ S imple tool, great effect: Can also be used by hobby screwdrivers without any problems

Technical basis

The bgm PRO template is based on real engine setups and experience from tuning practice. The angles are optimized for a good touring setup: approx. +10° from TDC / +3° TDC. This gives you noticeably more torque without losing driveability or suitability for everyday use. The timing is based on the use with original or slightly machined crankshafts - ideal for many popular tuning cylinders.

Suitable for the following Piaggio moped engines

Piaggio Ciao (also CH versions)

✅ Piaggio Boss

✅ Piaggio Boxer

✅ Piaggio Bravo

✅ Piaggio Grillo

✅ Piaggio PX

✅ Piaggio SI

✅ Piaggio Superbravo

FAQ - Frequently asked questions about the Piaggio moped intake timing milling template

Question Answer
Is this difficult to do? No. Easy to do with a file or hand router (Dremel, Proxxon) - even for beginners.
Can I damage the sealing surface? No. The template limits the depth and width exactly - the sealing surface remains secure.
Is this legal? Tuning is generally not permitted for road traffic in CH and DE. Use at your own risk.
Is it noticeably worth it? Definitely. The intake is the biggest brake on many mopeds. After optimization, it simply runs better.

Intake versions for Piaggio moped engines - Recognize & assign

Depending on the year of manufacture, model and market version, Piaggio has equipped the moped engine housings with different sized intakes. The following three versions have proven to be the most important distinguishing features in practice:

Version S - The throttled intake
✔️ Mainly installed in CH and DE models (e.g. Ciao with moped registration)
✔️ Recognizable by letters such as S or M in the engine number (between stars)
✔️ Frequently found: Housing embossing 990512 near the intake
➡ Very narrow intake - this is where the template provides the greatest increase

Version M - The standard intake
✔️ The most widespread internationally
✔️ Usually marked with 990510 next to the intake
✔️ No special letters in the engine number
➡ Most tuning parts (cylinders, intake manifolds) are matched to this intake

Version L - The large intake
✔️ Particularly on SI, Boxer and Bravo models from later model years
✔️ 11.5 x 7.5 stamping next to the intake as a reliable indicator
✔️ Also often marked with 990510 - precise inspection required
➡ Largest standard intake - already offers a good basis, but also benefits from precise reworking

Note: The terms S, M and L originate from tuning practice and are not official Piaggio designations. The frequently used term "Italo case" is also not clearly defined - it can apply to both M and L versions, but not to heavily throttled CH/DE cases (version S).
