More powerful engines require longer gear ratios to make optimum use of their potential. The Vespa wideframe models all have a primary reduction ratio of 22 - 67 (clutch - primary gear) ex works.

As a minimum solution, a 23-tooth clutch gear can be fitted instead of the 22-tooth clutch gear. However, this is only suitable for very tame engine versions. It is better to use a primary gear with 64 or 65 teeth. This significantly increases the reduction ratio. To do this, however, it is necessary to open the engine and completely remove the gearbox.

We recommend the following gear ratio:

Vespa 125 (VN, VM, ACMA 125, Motovespa N/S etc)

  • 64 - 22 is a slightly shorter ratio for more mountainous roads and good acceleration
  • 64 - 23 is a longer ratio for flatter roads and maximum top speed

Vespa 150 (VL, VB, VD, VGL)

  • 65 - 22 is slightly shorter for more mountainous roads and good acceleration
  • 65 - 23 has a longer gear ratio for flatter roads and maximum top speed
