Gearshift cross - DEXTER RACING, reinforced - Vespa PX old gearbox (up to approx. 1983) / Rally / Sprint / GTR / TS 125

Reinforced shift cross for the PX old gearbox generation and the classic largeframe gearboxes. Developed for long service life and clean power connections - ideal as a preventive replacement or when gears jump out under load.

PX old gearbox Rally / Sprint / GTR / TS Reinforced quality Wear part

Why replace?

Gears jumping out under load / short loss of traction → typical gearshift wear pattern
Shifts precisely between the gears and establishes the frictional connection
Protects the gears and gearshift cog - timely replacement prevents consequential damage
Reinforced material for tuned engines and sporty driving style

Service & service life

Recommended replacement interval: 12,000-25,000 km (depending on performance/driving style)
For heavily tuned engines: check more frequently (use oil change interval)
Also change/check: Shift detent, shift rod, gears (burr formation), spacing
Clean shift cable adjustment prevents incorrect contacts and premature wear

Compatible vehicle models (PX old / classic Largeframe gearbox)

PX 80 V8X1T up to no. 100230
PX 125 VNX2T up to no. 232052
PX 150 VLX1T up to no. 624301
PX 200 VSX1T up to no. 315266
Rally (180/200), Sprint, GTR, TS 125

Note: Not for PX Lusso/Arcobaleno (from ~1984), T5 and Cosa.

Iris 125/150/200 - early series with PX-alt gearbox(before Arcobaleno conversion)
150 S (Sprint derivative), 160 GT (GL/GT derivative)
200 DN/DS (Rally derivatives) with classic large-frame gearbox

Test criterion: identical gearshift/transmission system as PX old. Not suitable for later Arcobaleno/Cosa/T5 layouts.

PX Lusso/Arcobaleno (new gearbox layout)
T5 (independent gearbox technology)
Cosa (different layout ex works)

Installation instructions

Check gears for burrs, deburr slightly if necessary and distance correctly
Adjust the shift detent (play), shift rod (straight running) and shift cables precisely
Set the clutch cable play correctly - avoids load peaks when shifting
Transmission oil change recommended after the first 100-200 km of running-in

Note on wear

Frequent symptoms: Gear jumps under load / "jerks" → Check gearshift cross
Continuing to drive with a heavily worn cross damages the gears & shift detent
For tuned engines: Shorten the inspection interval

FAQ - Frequently asked questions about the DEXTER RACING gear cross (PX old)

The safest way is to check the chassis number/model year (see list above). PX old up to approx. 1983/84, after that mostly Arcobaleno/Lusso. Also a good hint: Remove the gearshift lever and check the width across flats of the shift bolt: SW13 = PX old, SW17 = PX Lusso. If unsure: compare the existing gearshift cross with the new part.
Depending on performance/driving style approx. 12,000-25,000 km. Check earlier for sports setups. Replace at the latest if gears are jumping out or the edges of the cross are heavily beveled.
Gear wheels (edges/ridge), shift detent (play/condition), shift rod (straight running), shaft spacing, shift cables (tension/adjustment).
Yes, provided the vehicle uses the old PX or classic large-frame gearbox (e.g. Iris early series, 150 S, 160 GT, 200 DN/DS). This cross is not suitable for later Arcobaleno/Cosa/T5 layouts.
In addition to the shift cross: gear wheel edges, spacing, shift detent, shift cable adjustment and clutch actuation. Incorrect gearwheel stacking or too much play causes the gears to jump out again.
