As a wear part, the gearshift cross is softer than the edge-hardened gearwheels and should be replaced after approximately 12,000-25,000 km, depending on engine performance and riding style. Wear on the gearshift cross is often noticeable in the form of gears jumping out, i.e. under load, the power connection is briefly interrupted only to re-engage shortly afterwards. This can be remedied with a new gearshift paddle. If you ride for a long time with a worn gearshift paddle, the gearwheels and the shift lever will quickly wear out. This is where sloppiness becomes expensive.
