BGM PRO SPORT shift cross - three-zone hardening for PX Lusso, T5, Cosa and licensed models

The BGM PRO SPORT shift cross is designed for large-frame engines, which today see significantly more torque and power than in standard condition. The special feature is the three-zone hardening: a tough core for shock loads, a firmer center zone and very hard flanks on the engagement surfaces. The aim is a gearshift cross that engages cleanly and absorbs wear in a controlled manner where it belongs - on the cross, not on the gear cogs.

Three-zone hardening 15CrMo5 / SCM415 Outer 58-60 HRC PX Lusso, T5, Cosa LML / Motovespa

Why three-zone hardening?

Tough on the inside: The core remains more elastic and better absorbs shifting errors.
Stable in the middle: The transition zone supports dimensional stability under load changes.
Hard on the outside: Flanks with 58-60 HRC for high wear resistance on the contact surfaces.
Practical objective: Gearshift cross as a wear part - instead of "taking along" gear wheels and shift detent.

Hardness ranges (HRC)

Inside: up to 45 HRC
Center: 50-55 HRC
Outside: 58-60 HRC

Note: 58-60 HRC is deliberately in the gearwheel range. Higher hardnesses in splined gears can lead to wear on expensive gear parts rather than the cross.

Material: 15CrMo5 (SCM415) chrome-molybdenum steel

BGM PRO uses 15CrMo5 (SCM415) as the base material. The case-hardening steel is tough and, thanks to its alloy content (including chromium and molybdenum), very suitable for highly stressed gear components. In combination with three-zone hardening, the result is a component that offers a clear stability reserve in everyday and sporting use.

Typical symptoms and maintenance logic

By design, a gearshift cross is a wearing part. If gears slip or "pluck" briefly under load, this is often due to the cross, a worn shift peg or incorrect spacing. If you continue driving for too long, you risk consequential damage to the gearwheels and gearshift detent.

Tip: When overhauling the engine, distance the gearbox properly - total play should ideally be well below 0.4 mm.
Tip: Check the gearshift detent: Roller bracket/detent must not have any perceptible play.
Tip: Do not mix components: PX old (offset) and PX Lusso (flat) must fit together.

Assembly tips from practical experience

The meshing surfaces on the gear cogs must be flat - damaged edges mean poor engagement.
Adjust the gear shift detent properly (cables, neutral point, detent points) - a fresh cross is no substitute for incorrect adjustment.
Important: The thread in the shift peg is a left-hand thread. To loosen, unscrew the bolt clockwise.

Suitable for

Vespa PX Lusso / EFL / Arcobaleno (from 1984) - PX80, PX125, PX150, PX200
Vespa T5 125 (incl. Elestart / Classic)
Vespa Cosa 125 / 150 / 200 (Cosa 1 and Cosa 2)
LML Star 125 2T / DLX / Deluxe / Via Toscana
LML Star 150 2T / DLX / Deluxe / Stella / Belladonna RV
LML Star 150 4T / Deluxe 150 4S / Speedy / Stella
LML Star 200 4T / Deluxe 4S (including from 2012)
Motovespa PX Iris, T5 Sport and possibly TX200 (licensed models, depending on the gearbox version)

Note: For rebuilt engines or mixed transmission parts, please compare the version (PX old vs. Lusso) and the design of the gearshift cross.

Conclusion

The BGM PRO SPORT shift pad provides a clear technical upgrade to a proven transmission concept: three-zone hardening, tough base material and hard flanks for clean engagement under load. If you ride your Largeframe regularly or move powerful setups, you get a stable basis - and keep the wear where it belongs.
