Auxiliary shaft -DRT Gear Flame Runner- Vespa Smallframe 4-speed (10-14-17-20)

The DRT Flame Runner is an auxiliary shaft for Vespa Smallframe 4-speed engines. It is used with original gearwheels and relies on an adapted gradation with short 3rd and extra short 4th gear. The aim is a better gear connection if the engine loses too much speed between third and fourth gear in series or in the tuning setup.

Technical background

With smallframe engines in particular, the jump from 3rd to 4th gear is often too large. The engine falls below the usable speed after shifting, especially when touring or when the gear ratio and tire rolling circumference do not match perfectly. With the RUNNER auxiliary shaft, the gradation in 3rd and 4th gear is shorter so that the engine remains in the appropriate speed window after shifting.

Note: A clean overall gear ratio always results from the primary, transmission, tire rolling circumference and engine concept. The gearshift cross and spacing should be checked for the setup.

DRT recommends the following primary ratios as a guide for typical setups:

Polini 100 cc: 2.88 (24/69) or 2.86 (21/60)
Polini 130 ccm: 2.55 (27/69) or 2.61 (23/60)
