Dell'orto PHDG 19 mm - universal racing carburetor for sporty setups

The PHDG is Dell'orto's latest generation of racing carburetors and was developed with modern two-stroke and four-stroke high-performance engines in mind. The 19 mm variant is the all-round size of the series and is suitable for sporty street configurations and high-torque engines where responsiveness and clean mixture preparation are the focus.

Design and flow control

The round venturi of the PHDG is located on an axis with inlet and outlet and is designed to optimize flow. The aim is to achieve a high air flow rate with the smoothest possible flow. The result is spontaneous throttle response and an easily controllable power build-up over the entire usable speed range.

The air intake profile at the carburetor mouth is matched to the slide geometry. When the throttle slide is opened, the response is very direct without being hectic or difficult to control - ideal for sporty road and trackday setups.

Construction and materials

The carburetor housing, float chamber and throttle slide are made of an aluminum alloy. This reduces weight and improves heat dissipation compared to classic die-cast zinc bodies. As a result, the mixture preparation remains stable even at high continuous temperatures.

The float needle valve is designed as a replaceable unit and is available in several sizes. This allows the fuel flow to be adapted to the respective setup and the type of supply (gravity or fuel pump). The idle mixture screw works with a large, finely adjustable setting range, which ensures smooth idling as well as a very direct response when starting off.

The aluminum throttle slide has a wear-reducing surface treatment and runs smoothly in its guide. The carburettor cover and the screw plug of the float chamber are also surface-finished - this ensures a harmonious racing finish with high mechanical resilience.

Installation and connection

Designed for installation in the connecting rubber or intake rubber: The PHDG 19 mm is guided as a plug-in carburettor in the elastic rubber flange. This protects the carburettor, decouples vibrations and makes it easier to adapt to intake manifolds with a 25 mm connection width.
The 46 mm air filter connection fits many common racing and road air filters and can therefore be easily integrated into existing intake systems.
Standard connections for separate lubrication and vacuum open up additional options - from connecting an oil pump to using a vacuum tap for components or diagnostics.

Tuning in practice

Practical tips

Start with a rather rich main jet and gradually work your way up to the ideal jetting via the spark plug pattern, speed curve and riding feel.
With the engine at operating temperature, adjust the idle mixture screw so that the engine runs stably when stationary and revs up without hesitation when the throttle is applied.
Adjust the needle position and mixing tube to the partial load range; always confirm intermediate steps with test drives under real conditions.

PHBG tuning parts in the PHDG

Many Dell'orto tuning parts from the PHBG family can also be used in the PHDG with the same part number. These include 5 mm main and idle jets, AN/AU mixing tubes, W-series jet needles and the 4.0 g floats. It is important that the Dell'orto part number is identical - then technically speaking it is the same component. Mechanical components such as the throttle valve, on the other hand, are PHDG-specific and should not be taken from the PHBG.

AN and AU mixing tubes

Depending on the version, PHDG standard carburetors are available with a closed AU mixing tube (without holes) or with a drilled AN mixing tube. In practice, it has become common practice to refer to AU variants as "two-stroke mixing tubes" and AN variants as "four-stroke mixing tubes". Technically, these are abbreviations for different flow and mixture characteristics, not a rigid assignment to an engine type.

Which mixing pipe variant is better suited to your own engine depends on the cubic capacity, exhaust system and intended use. The spark plug pattern, driveability in the partial load range and transition to full load are the decisive criteria here, not just the designation on the data sheet.

Scope of delivery

Dell'orto PHDG 19 mm carburetor in the above-mentioned configuration (Dell'orto 09853). Depending on the version, with corresponding basic jetting and the specified calibration elements according to the manufacturer's specifications.

Conclusion

The Dell'orto PHDG 19 mm is a versatile racing carburetor for sporty two-stroke setups. Optimized flow control, aluminium construction, plug-in installation in the rubber flange and a finely tunable idle system make it a strong basis if responsiveness and clean mixture formation are the main focus.

FAQ: PHDG 19 mm and tuning

Can I use PHBG tuning parts in the PHDG?
Yes, as long as the Dell'orto part number is identical. Many 5 mm main and idle jets, AN/AU mixing tubes, W needles and 4.0 g floats can be used across PHBG and PHDG. Mechanical parts such as the throttle valve are PHDG-specific and cannot be transferred 1:1 from the PHBG.
What is the difference between AN and AU mixing tubes?
AN mixing tubes have cross bores and influence the mixture formation differently than the closed AU mixing tubes, especially in the partial load range. In the scene, AU types are often referred to as "two-stroke mixing tubes" and AN types as "four-stroke mixing tubes" - ultimately, however, the specific engine setup decides which mixing tube delivers the more consistent characteristics.
Is the PHDG only suitable for two-stroke engines?
The basic tuning of this variant is two-stroke oriented, but the PHDG series was developed with two- andfour-stroke high-performance engines in mind. With adapted jetting and suitable peripherals, the carburetor can also be used on suitable four-stroke setups.
What are the 2T mixer and vacuum connections for?
The 2T mixer connection is used to integrate a separate lubrication system (oil pump). The vacuum connection can be used for vacuum-controlled components or as a measuring or diagnostic connection. Both connections extend the range of applications without restricting the basic function of the carburetor.
