Bore 70 mm, stroke 58 mm, Nikasil-coated aluminum cylinder. Timing: Exhaust 185°, transfer port 130°, intake diaphragm-controlled, advance 27.5°.
The TS1 is the legend among Lambretta tuning cylinders, developed by Terry Shepperd and manufactured in the Italian foundry GILARDONI. The TS1 has a number of design advantages, for example the heat dissipation of the aluminum used is significantly better than that of cast iron cylinders. Thanks to the diaphragm control used, the TS1 can achieve a high peak performance without the well-known disadvantages of slot control. With the long intake control angle required for high engine speeds, this tends to blow a lot of the gasoline-air mixture that has just been sucked in back out to the carburetor and thus naturally work very uneconomically. As a result, the TS1 is able to push off from the bottom of the rev range without lacking peak power compared to the original slot-controlled engine.
Out of the box, the TS1 is good for 13-17kW with a suitable exhaust and carburettor. The TS1 rewards every further sensible modification with an even greater willingness to perform, so that well over 30 hp is not uncommon.
The diagram below shows the setup of three different TS1 street engines. The blue curve is from a plugged TS1 225 cc with 58cc shaft, 35 Mikuni and the JL 3 exhaust. It's nice to see how well the TS1 already plug-and-play and without a big tear-up ensures very fast progress. The green and red curves are the SCK winning engines from the gsf Clubman/Ancillotti dyno bet. One with a clear lowering, uncompromisingly designed for torque, and the other with the TS1 Racetour tuning by MB Developments, both victories went to Cologne.
