VMC 244 Explorer cylinder Ø72 mm, 244 ccm, central spark plug

Conversion kit for Vespa 200 engines: Rally 200, P200E, PX200 E, PX200 Lusso, PX200 (1998), PX200 MY, Cosa 200.

The VMC 244 Explorer is a high-displacement sports cylinder for classic Vespa 200 engines. The focus is on torque and a rideable power curve. Technically, the Explorer uses the long rod concept: pistons and transfer windows work above the housing sealing surface with a large surface area and volume.

Technology: Long rod and shell molding

VMC uses a shell-moulded aluminium cylinder for the Explorer. The raceway is finished with a nickel-silicon coating. In combination with a 60 mm stroke crankshaft and long connecting rod (126-127 mm, depending on the shaft), the overflow system is "lifted" by design. This provides more usable overflow area and volume - a key factor in powerful 2-stroke setups.

Piston and rings

The kit includes a high-quality Meteor piston. The piston skirts have an anti-friction coating based on molybdenum disulphide (MoS2). The piston rings are chrome-plated steel rings.

Assembly: Housing machining is mandatory

The Explorer has an approx. 8 mm long cylinder bore (cylinder sleeve) that plunges into the engine housing. To do this, the cylinder inlet on the engine housing must be machined to Ø76 mm and 8 mm depth. VMC supplies a steel basette or guide for this, which is screwed to the housing halves. The machining can also be carried out manually with a suitable milling cutter - the instructions in the manual are crucial here.

Workshop solution: precise machining on the milling machine is also possible
Note: without machining, the cylinder base will not fit into the housing opening

More stroke possible: 62 and 64 mm

The cylinder's long bore ensures clean piston guidance. This means that the Explorer is designed in such a way that it can also be operated with a stroke of 62 mm or 64 mm. In this case, the control angles can be specifically adjusted using suitable spacers and the geometry of the crankshaft.

Gaskets and spacers included in the scope of delivery

Paper gaskets (cylinder)0.2 / 0.3 / 0.4 / 0.5 mm
Aluminum spacer head to cylinder0.3 / 0.5 / 1.0 mm
Aluminum spacer cylinder base0.5 / 1.0 mm

Conclusion

The VMC 244 Explorer combines long rod geometry, 7 transfer ports and a modern aluminum cylinder construction with a nickel-silicon bore. If you are prepared to machine the engine case cleanly to Ø76 mm, you get a consistently designed 244 cc setup for Vespa 200 engines.
