Modern aluminum cylinder with direct intake for anyone looking for a powerful smallframe engine suitable for touring with clean power delivery.
The VMC Thug 144 is designed as a modern smallframe cylinder for riders who want to build a fast and powerful street engine without going straight into a completely extreme high-rev concept. Its basic character is clearly designed for fast touring: powerful from below, easy to ride on long distances and at the same time with sufficient technical reserves for later expansion stages. This is exactly what makes the Thug so interesting. It is not a nervous special part, but a very good basis for powerful PV and ET3 engines suitable for everyday use.
VMC expressly positions the Thug as a modern further development of classic sporty smallframe cylinders. The move to aluminum and reed valve intake brings precisely the advantages that are appreciated today in a powerful street engine: more stable thermals, clean mixture control and an overall wider usable band. The result is an engine that rides much more maturely on the road than many older concepts.
A real asset of the Thug is the NiKaSil-coated raceway from Gilardoni. This stands for high thermal stability, low friction and very constant conditions, even when the engine is under constant strain on longer stages or in summer temperatures. This is precisely what makes the cylinder particularly interesting for fast tours.
The Thug works with a large diaphragm pack in the style of the Yamaha RD350, giving the intake side a clearly modern design and providing a very good basis for stable carburetor tuning and clean filling.
The cylinder head is held in place not only by the four classic stud bolts, but also by four additional bolts. This 8-fold screw connection significantly increases the stability of the composite and helps to prevent leaks or distortion in the heavily loaded area.
For installation on Piaggio housings with 51 mm stroke and 97 mm connecting rod, the cylinder mount in the engine housing must be turned out to a diameter of 64 mm and a depth of approx. 8 mm so that the cylinder sleeve can be inserted cleanly into the housing.
VMC supplies a steel guide for this purpose, which is screwed to the cylinder stud bolts. This means that this work can also be carried out cleanly by hand with a milling cutter.
The Thug is not supplied naked, but as a well-prepared kit. In addition to the cylinder and head, the essential parts for the intake side and assembly are also included. This simplifies assembly considerably and also makes the cylinder interesting for ambitious mechanics who do not want to search for every detail individually.

VMC specifically names the Thug for classic smallframe vintage frames such as Special 50, ET3, Primavera and 50 N/L/R. In addition, the cylinder is designed so that it can be mounted on Vespa 50 and Ape 50 housings without having to remove the half-moon dust cover. It is also compatible with fan wheels and starter ring gear.
