The oil sump gasket is an important component for reliably sealing the engine crankcase. It is fitted between the oil sump and the engine crankcase and prevents engine oil from escaping at the joint. The original Piaggio oil sump gasket with part number 846098 is designed for numerous engines from the Leader and Quasar series and is used in Vespa, Piaggio, Aprilia, Gilera and Derbi vehicles, among others.
This gasket design is also used on the corresponding Royal Alloy GP 300 and TG 300 models. In these applications, the Piaggio gasket replaces the original Royal Alloy part with part number 100075802.
The oil sump forms the lower closure of the engine oil reservoir. A permanently oil-tight joint must be maintained where it connects to the engine crankcase. The oil sump gasket performs this function by being positioned between the two components and compressed evenly when the oil sump is bolted into place.
The gasket's outline, mounting holes and sealing areas are designed to match the corresponding Piaggio oil sump construction. This ensures that the intended sealing surfaces are covered without obstructing any openings required by the design.
Whenever an oil sump is removed, the existing gasket should be inspected and replaced as part of a professional repair. A gasket that has already been compressed, damaged or has adhered to the sealing surface may no longer provide reliable sealing after reassembly.
The Piaggio Leader and Quasar engines are among the manufacturer's widely used four-stroke engine families. The Leader series is used in various vehicles with 125 and 200 cc engines, among others. The Quasar series includes, in particular, the liquid-cooled 250 and 300 cc engines fitted to numerous Vespa GT, GTS and GTV models, as well as other vehicles from the Piaggio Group.
The oil sump gasket with original part number 846098 is used on the corresponding engine variants within these series. It is suitable both for repairing the standard oil sump and for compatible replacement oil sumps, provided they use the same gasket geometry.
Important: Different oil sump gaskets are used on Piaggio Leader and Quasar engines. In particular, there are design differences between older Euro 1/Euro 2 versions and later Euro 3 engines. The correct gasket should therefore be selected according to the original part number and the specific engine version. Engine capacity and model designation alone are not always sufficient for reliable identification.
Before installation, the sealing surfaces of the oil sump and engine crankcase must be thoroughly cleaned to remove all traces of the old gasket, oil deposits and dirt. Care must be taken not to damage the sealing surfaces with sharp-edged tools. Both components should also be inspected for distortion, damage and other irregularities.
The new gasket is positioned between the oil sump and engine crankcase, aligning its outline and mounting holes correctly. The oil sump is then secured evenly. The mounting bolts must be tightened in the sequence specified by the vehicle manufacturer and to the prescribed tightening torque. Excessive tightening can damage the gasket or the sealing surfaces.
Additional sealant should only be used if expressly specified in the installation instructions for the respective engine. After reassembly, the specified engine oil level must be restored and the joint checked for leaks. A further visual inspection after the engine has been run for the first time is recommended.
The original Piaggio oil sump gasket 846098 is a precisely fitting replacement part for maintenance and repair work on the corresponding Leader and Quasar engines. It allows the seal between the oil sump and engine crankcase to be properly restored and is particularly suitable when replacing or removing the oil sump.
