Modern LED headlight for the PX steering head

The MOTO NOSTRA LED HighPower headlight brings modern lighting technology to the classic Vespa PX steering head. With a diameter of 143 mm and the enclosed mounting frame kit, the headlight fits perfectly into the original mount and replaces the standard Bilux headlight without any major bodywork work.

The integrated LED unit provides high and low beam as well as a separately switchable position light. The light pattern is clearly contoured and the illumination of the road is significantly better than with conventional 45/45 W Bilux lamps - with significantly lower power consumption.

Advantages of LED technology

In practice, classic PX ignitions usually deliver between 80 and 120 W total power. Conventional 45/45 W headlight lamps use a large proportion of this, but their luminous intensity remains below 400 lumens. With around 1,300 lumens, the LED HighPower headlamp achieves more than three times the luminosity, roughly equivalent to a conventional 100 W headlamp, and only requires around 20-22 W to do so. This leaves more reserve in the vehicle electrical system for indicators, brake lights, charging sockets or other consumers.

Mechanical installation

The scope of delivery includes a specially adapted conversion frame and side brackets with which the headlight is screwed into the PX steering head. The installation is based on the illustrated instructions: prepare the side brackets with box nuts, attach them correctly aligned ("TOP" marking) to the headlight, insert the frame from the front and screw it into the adjustment rail. Then adjust the headlight range and finally tighten all screws.

Electrical connection and on-board power supply

The LED headlight works exclusively with 12 V direct current (DC). It requires a battery or an equivalent 12 V DC source. Operation on an alternating current (AC) source will inevitably cause the headlamp to malfunction - direct connection to conventional AC lighting circuits is therefore taboo.

The connections have a classic structure: Ground, low beam, high beam and position/daytime running light are connected as separate lines. In an existing DC vehicle electrical system (e.g. PX old with battery or PX Lusso/Disc with electric starter), the headlight can be connected to the existing 12 V battery harness as soon as the wiring harness has been adapted accordingly.

Important: Only 12 V DC - operation on AC will destroy the headlight

The MOTO NOSTRA LED HighPower headlight is consistently designed for DC operation. It may only be operated from a 12 V battery or an equivalent 12 V DC source. Connection to alternating current (AC) - e.g. directly to an original, unregulated light coil - will result in immediate damage to the headlight.

Before fitting, it is therefore always necessary to check whether the vehicle already has a DC circuit with battery or can be converted accordingly.

PX old (German models with battery up to approx. 1983)

Many old German PX models have a battery ex works, for example for indicators and parking lights. In these vehicles, the LED headlight can be connected to the existing 12 V DC circuit. The wiring harness must be adapted so that the driving light is no longer supplied directly from the AC light coil, but from the battery/regulator circuit. In practice, it is usually sufficient to connect the headlight to the positive ignition circuit and adjust the fuse protection.

PX Lusso / PX Disc with electric starter

PX Lusso and PX Disc models with electric starter already have an on-board electrical system with clearly separated AC and DC circuits. Here, the headlight can be integrated relatively easily by reconnecting the driving light to the existing DC circuit. In many conversions, the standard wiring harness is slightly modified or a PX 98/MY wiring harness is used as the basis for a "fully DC" system. Proper ground routing, correct fusing and sufficiently dimensioned cables are mandatory.

Vehicles without a battery - planning the DC concept

Scooters without a battery require a retrofitted DC on-board power supply to operate the LED headlight. Typical solutions are a DC-based alternator/ignition (e.g. VAPE or similar systems) in conjunction with a full-wave regulator and a battery. In many cases, an adapted or completely new wiring harness makes sense in order to create a clean DC circuit for lights, indicators, horn and additional consumers.

Practical examples and wiring diagrams for PX Lusso "full DC" conversions with battery and modern ignition are documented in the German Scooter Forum. Among other things, ground-free stators, suitable DC regulators (e.g. BGM PRO Wassell/PODtronic) and the design of fuses and cable cross-sections are discussed there.

FAQ

Yes. The spotlight works exclusively with 12 V DC. It must be operated from a battery or an equivalent DC source. If connected directly to alternating current (AC), the headlight will break.
For PX old models with battery up to approx. 1983, the conversion is comparatively simple. The wiring harness is adapted so that the headlight is supplied from the existing 12 V DC circuit (battery via regulator). Depending on the setup, minor changes to the fuse, light switch and ground routing may be necessary.
Yes. These models already have a DC circuit for the battery and electric starter. The LED headlight can usually be integrated into the existing 12 V DC circuit after adapting the wiring harness. In individual cases, check the wiring diagram and the existing controller and battery capacity.
Only if the vehicle is converted to a DC vehicle electrical system with battery. Operation is not possible without a battery and without a suitable DC ignition. A fully-fledged DC concept with modern alternator, full-wave regulator and adapted wiring harness is recommended.
The headlight carries an E9 marking. It can be used in road traffic if it is installed correctly, the headlamp range is set correctly and it is registered correctly and the national regulations are observed.
This is how we ensure, that reviews come from real consumers.
