On the Vespa Smallframe, a suitable primary transmission ratio determines how well your engine converts power into propulsion, as the gear ratio is basically the same on most Smallframe engines - the transmission ratio is primarily "made" via theprimary. This is exactly where the DEXTER RACING primary 27/69 (2.56) comes in: a straight-toothed solution with a standard clutch basket, designed for long-term stable use even with more powerful setups.
27/69 = 2,56 Straight-toothed Reinforced version Basis: original clutch basket For many smallframe engines
In this version, the design deliberately remains close to the original solution: the primary is based on the stock clutch basket, but is built up with a reinforced primary repair kit. The advantage: You use a familiar, proven basic concept, but get the stability you need for more powerful cylinders and a sporty riding style. The aim is a primary that is not only suitable for everyday use, but also remains permanently stable with setups around 20 hp.
The 27/69 ratio corresponds to 2.56 and is therefore within the range of the usual long smallframe primary ratios. How "long" a primary should be always depends on the displacement, exhaust layout and power delivery: High-torque engines can have longer ratios, while speed-oriented concepts benefit from the right balance of top speed and connection.
Particularly in the "big class" from around 125 cc upwards, an extremely long primary is often not necessary because the 125 cc base already has a fairly long gear ratio. Instead, a sporty cylinder often already provides a significant increase in speed due to its extra revs without having to stretch the primary even further. The 2.56 is a practical solution for many setups in which rideability and clean top speed are just as important as top speed.
Smallframe engines generally have comparable gear ratios. Exceptions are three-speed transmissions and automatic models. The primary selection should therefore always match the engine, the exhaust and the desired riding style.
The DEXTER RACING primary 27/69 (2.56) is a straight-toothed, reinforced primary transmission for smallframe engines if you are looking for a durable solution based on the original clutch basket. Useful for many 125cc and powerful setups where a balanced gear ratio and robust durability are paramount.
