Better gear connection with short 4th gear

Why install a short 4th gear in the Vespa
? The
short 4th gear is installed to improve the gear connection to 4th gear and this works very well with the short 4th gear with 36 teeth! The short 4th gear for Vespa PX engines is useful for all types of use, whether for everyday riders, tourers or racers. With 36 teeth, this gear is
one tooth shorter than the original fourth gear of a Vespa PX200.
bgm PRO - Premium tuning parts
The bgm Pro gear parts are made of ultra-solid material. The gears are made of
high-alloy NiCrMo case-hardened steel (20NiCrMo2-2/ AISI8620) to withstand the highest loads. The very good base material can withstand even the highest motor power. The precisely defined surface hardening to 58-60HRC makes the pinions extremely resistant to wear. Consistently high quality. No compromises.
- more relaxed riding,
- smaller gear jump,
- higher gear ratio with further optimization of the transmission
Gear 4 -BGM PRO- Vespa PX Lusso T5 125cc, PX200 Lusso (short) - 36 teeth
Short 4th gear Vespa PX Lusso Suitable for all gearboxes with a flat shift cross. These gearboxes can be recognized by the main shaft which has a circlip in front of the gears.
Gear 4 -BGM PRO- Vespa PX old, PX200 (short) - 36 teeth
Short 4th gear Vespa PX old. Suitable for all gearboxes with a cranked gearshift cross. These gearboxes can be recognized by the main shaft which has a circlip in front of and behind the gears. The center segment on which the gearshift cross rests is
- PX old (up to 1984, cranked gear cross): 5mm
- Lusso (from 1984, flat gear cross): 6.5mm
The center segments of the BGM gears are larger (approx. 1/10mm) and thus offer even more contact surface for the shift cross
Scooter Center Technical tip:
The
short fourth gear can be ideally combined with the
longer reduction ratio 64 teeth BGM Pro primary gear. In conjunction with a 24T clutch pinion, the overall gear ratio is
significantly longer,
but the
gear jump from third to fourth is shorter. This means that the full engine power can also be converted into
top speed.
- more relaxed driving,
- smaller gear jump,
- higher gear ratio with further optimization of the transmission
The combination of a
24/64 reduction and a short fourth gear has proved
particularly interesting
on torque-emphasized Malossi Sport and Polini 221 engines.

Due to the
short fourth gearreduces the
gear jump from gear 3 to gear 4 by a healthy amount, so that a
good gear connection is always
guaranteed with sufficient torque and your scooter can pull away cleanly when shifting into fourth gear. You can see the effect of the difference in the table and graph** below. With the longer gear ratio, you can achieve a good cruising speed for city or cross-country trips in the lower gears at very low revs. In gear 4, the combination enables brisk travel at reduced revs and the possibility of reaching a higher top speed.
