New Vespa gearshift claw from bgm PRO for Vespa 4-speed gearbox

shift claw
bgm PRO Precision work made from high-quality material
The
bgm PRO Vespa shift claw BGM6550 is made from 15CrMo5 (SCM415) chrome-molybdenum steel and the additional tempering of the high-quality material gives the flanks of the shift claw a
very high resistance to wear. The flanks have a very narrow tolerance compared to the majority of shifting claws available on the market. This results in accurate guidance in the grooves of the main shaft, which effectively prevents the shift claw from shifting/tilting under load [su_spacer] [su_button url="https://www.scooter-center.com/en/product/BGM6550" background="#ff071a" size="10" icon="icon: plus"]Order Vespa gearshift claw[/su_button] [su_spacer] We have revised the four gear shift gate, which offers
the following advantages:
GANG 1-2
The engagement profile of first gear has been revised so that it is easier to engage. Shifting into second gear is also significantly faster. This is a particularly useful feature in racing to make the interruption in tractive force as short as possible. GEAR
2-4
The engagement profiles of the other gears have been revised so that the gears engage much more precisely. This largely prevents the unpleasant jumping out of a gear under load, which is often a problem with slightly worn gearwheels with conventional gearshift claws. The BGM shift spring has a supporting effect. Its spring force is precisely matched and offers ideal conditions for an easily shiftable gearbox with smoothly engaging gears.

Suitable for Vespa PK gearbox
The BGM Pro Vespa gearshift claw is manufactured for the so-called PK gearbox type. This is driven with the round type shift claw (length of 50mm (overall height)). Round type shift claw means that the pins that engage in the gear wheel have a radius at the transition to the end of the arm.
Help: Identifying the gearbox
The PK type can be recognized by the marking on the gear wheels. This always starts with a 42xx (= round gear claw with 50mm). The old type is identified by the number 37xx (= square gear claw with 51mm)
Exceptions
The PK gearbox version was already used in the last years of the
- V50 (V5A1T from no. 69444),
- V50 Special (V5B3T from no. 94315),
- V550 Elestart (V5B4T from no. 1514) and the
- PV125 (VMA2T from no. 150203) and
- ET3 (VMB1T from no. 8161).
The development of a new Vespa gearshift claw
Racing tests
We carried out a number of tests to develop the
Vespa gearshift claw. For example, we used a shift claw on several scooters over the course of an entire racing season. Some of the vehicles also took part in several endurance races and races as part of the ESC. Here is a comparison between a new BGM Vespa shift claw from the current series (left) and a BGM shift claw from the test series, which was used for over a year in two classes of the ESC and in endurance races.
Consistently excellent shifting performance and low wear
The consistently good shifting performance and low wear are due, on the one hand, to the choice of material and its coating and, on the other, to the precise guidance of the shift claw in the main shaft. Precise production of this component is essential, but extremely costly. Some manufacturers on the market have therefore apparently decided to simply design the arms of the shift claw and thus the guides in the main shaft very generously - so that the component no longer has to be manufactured so precisely in the end. As a cautionary example, we took a look at a new, current Piaggio shift claw. The surface quality of the original part is more than poor these days....
The new bgm PRO Vespa gearshift claw in comparison
On the left is another BGM gearshift claw from the current series and on the right a new (!) gearshift claw from the Piaggio bag

What is already apparent visually becomes clear when measuring. Piaggio sets its own standards here...

At 0.8mm, the backlash is clearly too large. Such a shift claw inevitably leads to the gears jumping out under load.
The greater the backlash, the faster the shift claw can wear out. If the gap in the groove of the main shaft is too large, the shift claw will hit the main shaft "on start-up" with every load change and shifting operation. The rather soft material of the simple shift claw suffers greatly under this load and the wear increases further. As a comparison, common Vespa shift claws available on the market have a backlash of around 0.4 mm, but even here there are sometimes outliers - even high-priced models from Italy stand out with around 0.7 mm.
With the BGM gearshift claw,
the backlash is kept
as low as possible through
meticulous tolerancing.

At just five hundredths, the backlash measures just as much as a human hair and the gearshift claw fits perfectly into the main shaft, literally by a hair's breadth.
Clean gear changes with the bgm PRO Vespa gearshift claw BGM6550
In conjunction with the
BGM PRO gearshift spring, crisp and precise gear changes are possible. The reinforced shift spring ensures that the shift balls engage securely in the gate. The reinforced spring also prevents the gears from jumping out or the shift claw from being pushed out of the engaged gear even under load with increased gear play [su_spacer] [su_button url="https://www.scooter-center.com/en/product/BGM6550" background="#ff071a" size="10" icon="icon: plus"]Order Vespa gearshift claw[/su_button] [su_spacer]
