Polini EVOLUTION 4-disc sports clutch with wave spring - for classic Vespa Smallframe clutches

This Polini EVOLUTION clutch unit is designed for powerful engines in classicVespa Smallframe and Piaggio Ape 50. It replaces the complete clutch core of the original Smallframe central spring clutch (small spider) and, with anew type of flat wire wave spring, provides significantly more reserves and better operability. The EVOLUTION core is supplied without clutch linings - ideal if you want to match the linings and pack thickness specifically to your setup.

For classic smallframe central spring clutch Innovative central wave spring Designed for engines > 15 hp Nitrided steel components Contact pressure up to approx. 200 kg

FOR RACE & EVOLUTION - where to classify the set

Polini offers two clutch variants with identical basic design for Vespa Smallframe:

FOR RACE: 4-disc clutch with wave spring, 4 cork linings (1.9 mm each) and 3 coated steel discs for engines up to approx. 15 hp.
EVOLUTION: 4-disc clutch with wave spring, 4 sintered linings (1.9 mm each) and 3 coated steel discs for engines well over 15 hp.

The product described here is the EVOLUTION clutch core with wave spring and nitrided steel parts - without linings. You can use it to upgrade an existing For-Race or EVOLUTION kit, fit a new one or put together your own pad package.

Wave spring instead of coil spring - modern technology in a classic housing

The heart of the Polini clutches is the flat wire wave spring. In contrast to the conventional coil spring, it cannot tilt on one side. The spring works over its entire surface, the linings run flat and separate cleanly. This reduces plucking, reduces heat spots and ensures a clearly defined pressure point on the clutch.

At the same time, the clutch is noticeably easier to operatewith comparable contact pressure than with a very hard coil spring - a clear advantage in everyday use and on the racetrack.

High reserves for powerful engines

The spider, base plate and cover plate are made of nitrided steel and are therefore significantly more resilient than standard parts. The base plate has an enlarged diameter spring mount, which securely guides the wave spring. Depending on the engine power, the contact pressure can be increased to around 200 kg using the spacers supplied.

Suitable for heavily tuned street engines and racing setups well over 15 hp
Stable torque transmission at high engine speeds and aggressive gear ratios
Good modulation despite high clamping force - ideal for traffic light starts, sprints and circuits

Compatible vehicles - classic smallframe with small spider

The Polini EVOLUTION clutch fits all engines with the classic Smallframe central spring clutchand small clutch spider (original V50/Primavera/PK S/PK XL design). These include, among others:

Vespa 50 (V50 N, 50 L, 50 R, 50 Special, 50 Sprinter, 50 SS/SR)
Vespa 90/100 (90, 90 SS, 90 Racer, 100, 100 Sport)
Vespa 125 Smallframe (125 Nuova, 125 Primavera VMA1T/VMA2T, 125 Primavera ET3 VMB1T)
Vespa PK Smallframe with classic clutch (PK 50 S, PK 50 XL, PK 50 XL Rush, PK 80 S, PK 125 S, PK 125, PK 125 ETS)
Piaggio Ape 50 with smallframe engine and central spring clutch
Motovespa Smallframe with classic clutch, e.g. 50/75 (06M/07M/08M), 75 PR, 75 Primavera, 125 Primavera (9NK/9NV/9T) and early Motovespa PK 75/PK 125 S/XL without XL2 clutch

All automatic smallframes (e.g. PK Automatic, Plurimatic) and models with modern XL2/HP/FL clutch (internal lever mechanism, multi-spring basket) areexcluded. The clutch design is fundamentally different for these engines and this EVOLUTION kit is not suitable.

Note on the wave spring

The wave spring used in the EVOLUTION and FOR-RACE kit is a special Polini design: It is shorter, has a larger outer diameter and only fits into the enlarged spring holder of the EVOLUTION/FOR-RACE base plate. It is not identical to the separately available Polini wave spring for standard clutches - mixing the springs is not intended.

Assembly & setup

The set includes spider, base plate, cover plate, central wave spring and spacer rings. Theclutch linings and friction discs are not included and are selected to suit the intended use. When setting up theclutch, ensure the correct pack thickness and sufficient clearance to the clutch basket.

Dismantle the clutch, replace old components and any worn standard components
Assemble the lining pack (e.g. 4 cork or 4 sintered linings) and steel plates according to the Polini diagram
Place the wave spring and spacers in the enlarged mount of the EVOLUTION base plate
Adjust the contact pressure to the power and intended use via the number/thickness of the spacer rings
After installation, adjust the clutch cable properly and check release/separation behavior

FAQ

It fits all engines with a classic central spring clutch and small spider(V50, 90/100, Primavera, ET3, PK S/XL/ETS, many Motovespa and Ape 50). It is not suitable for PK XL2, HP/FL models and smallframe automatic vehicles, as these use a different clutch design.
No. This EVOLUTION kit is supplied without friction linings. This allows you to freely adapt the linings (cork or sintered) and pack thickness to your engine and application.
No. The wave spring used in the EVOLUTION/FOR-RACE kit is specific to this clutch (shorter, larger outer diameter) and does not fit in standard mounts. Conversely, the standard Polini wave spring is not intended for the EVOLUTION base plate.
Yes. This is exactly where the wave spring comes into its own: It enables high clamping force with comparatively moderate manual force. You can use the spacers to adjust the spring hardness to suit your engine and intended use - from a powerful touring engine to a racing configuration.
