Upgrading to a modern stator/ignition system is a reliable way to enjoy more dependable and durable riding. Contactless CDI ignitions are virtually indestructible and highly reliable. Modern regulated on-board electrics also offer significantly greater lighting performance – not only because the voltage increases from 6V to 12V, but also because the stator coil itself delivers more output overall.
This requires adapting the wiring harness, as modern stators connect all lighting coils in series to maximize output, providing just one live cable for the onboard voltage. This feeds into a voltage regulator that limits output to a steady 12–13 volts. This prevents the infamous “domino effect” of old wiring systems, where a single failed bulb would cause all others to blow. Only after the regulator is power distributed to individual consumers. This design also enables use of high-performance stators like our BGM unit, which delivers excellent lighting and ignition power even at low RPM.
To run such a stator in an old chassis, a suitable wiring harness is required. Our conversion harness is ideal for this – and highly universal. It’s based on a reduced electrical system that powers the horn, headlight/low beam, and tail/brake light. Optional blinker relay installation is also supported and preconfigured in the harness.
In combination with our BGM 12V voltage regulator, this creates a modern and reliable electrical system – offering brilliant lighting and useful features like a DC outlet to charge your phone or a navigation device.
With our conversion harness, no battery is required. Existing 6V horns can still be used – they tolerate the occasional 12V without issue. More technical details can be found in our wiring diagram.
