Sunday morning, sunshine, coffee in the garden, and that one sentence from a conversation the previous evening that still resonates:
"Listen, you racing driver!" - The exact context? No idea anymore. But the word... racing driver. Something clicked.
Sure, I'm more the type: full throttle on the highway but I also love the beach and sunglasses. But racing? Somewhere inside me, this idea had been lying dormant for a while.
And suddenly it was there - the vision:
VESBEACHI! Race on the beach! No joke, it's real. And it was also the 5th anniversary. If not now, then when?

But well, dreaming alone is not enough. I still had a battered 130 DR lying dormant in a scooter. That was a start.
But: mess up my Special? Never! So I had to get a new frame.
And as it happens, it didn't take 48 hours and someone knew someone.
In exchange for a crate of beer, I got a PK-s full cut in zebra look.
 Codename: "Marty" was immediately obvious.
The frame had already seen a few races - perfect!
Then everything happened in quick succession. Full of motivation, I told Uwe Schneider and Alex Stroh about my plan. Their reaction?
A collective shake of the head at first. Racing ambitions are all well and good, but:
"You need more power."
And as it happens... I let myself be persuaded. It costs money to have fun ;)
What the two of them didn't know at the time was that they had talked themselves into an adventure.
Questions upon questions - setup, tires, gear ratios, suspension, rules...
(Which rules exactly? I don't know, it doesn't matter, the main thing is to ride!)
A few weeks and countless sleepless nights later:
The EGIG Zebra Marty was born.
Test bench, 24.7 hp / 127 km/h.
But this is all about sand - and therefore also about grip, traction and responsiveness.
Alex and Uwe agreed once again: the gearbox had to be shorter.
Spoiler: That was a really good decision. But we'll find out later...

The time had come! The big day had arrived. I packed my PX and the zebra onto the trailer - I couldn't drive straight to Nethen without a license plate - and set off for the beach.
400 kilometers lay ahead of me, towards the North Sea.
A 4.5-hour drive, enough time to think.
I was pretty nervous. Original suspension - is it perhaps too soft?
Should I have gone for something more sensible?
An air filter might have been a good idea after all.
But I kept saying to myself: "Hey, it's nothing..."
My gut instinct only replied with a wink:
"Now you've put so much energy into it - now you're going to bring the bowl home too. What else are your colleagues going to say?"

And then, finally: VESBEACHI #5 - The open-brand scooter meeting on the beach
...I was there.
And wow... this location! Simply incredible.
It looked more like a vacation than a scooter meeting.
A very special kind of scooter meeting. I hadn't even made it all the way to the grounds when the wildest conversions drove past me - together with lovingly preserved originals from every manufacturer from many decades.
Open to all brands .... I loved it immediately.

But suddenly I was pressed for time.
I finally wanted to try out the scooter!
Down to the beach, fully motivated - off to the track...
And I was immediately put off:
Not so easy. How are you supposed to fast ride here?
People were pushing themselves every minute.
I just thought to myself: "Well, it's no use... Let's do it now too.
And then it was finally time: Saturday. Race day. Showtime.
And nobody would believe what happened next: me, a rookie, bang, one lap further, opponent knocked out. Then third, fourth... and suddenly I was in the semi-finals.
I could hardly believe it, but then - the final. There I was, completely overwhelmed, but also really intoxicated.
In the end, I came second. Julius took first place - the defending champion himself. Respect, Julius, that was well deserved!

But let's be honest: that was only part of the whole thing. There was so much more besides the race track! The custom show was awesome - the scooters on display, every part, every detail.
I couldn't get enough of it, there was always something new to discover. And the parts market? Not bad either! There was everything that makes a mechanic's heart beat faster - from decorative stuff to what felt like the rarest parts in the world that you can no longer get in any store.
Not to forget: the people! Old acquaintances, lots of new faces - always chatting about technology, tuning, whatever. That's what makes the whole thing special: The mixture of racing, tinkering and simply the right community.
Noise, sand, tinkering and lots of scooter passion. It was a weekend I will never forget. Sure, second place feels good, but this is just the beginning. There is still a lot to do, a lot to learn.
VESBEACHI #5 will definitely stay with me. And next year? I'll be there again. No question about it!
