Vespa V50 fork service | Tips & Tricks

In our latest workshop video, we take on the fork of the yellow Vespa V50. The aim of the operation: to replace the old, tired shock absorber with a modern BGM model and prepare the entire wheel hub and swingarm for powder coating.

Once again, it turns out that after 40 years, the devil is in the detail - or in the seized shock absorber bolt.

Don't force the mudguard!

An important tip first: Never try to remove the mudguard without first removing the lower bearing shell of the headset. If you pry here, you risk creases in the sheet metal that you will never be able to get out again.

The pitfalls of the speedometer cable

Care must be taken when removing the speedometer cable. As the upper connection piece (the "metal plunger") does not fit through the lower hole in the fork, the shaft must be pulled out upwards. In the video, we show you the hidden retaining plate and how to remove the speedometer cable without damaging it.

Brake and wheel hub: of castle nuts and left-hand threads

A classic for beginners: the nut on the wheel axle has a left-hand thread! If you turn it in the wrong direction, you will destroy the component. We explain in detail:

• Dismantling brake shoes: Why the omega ring (circlip) often flies through the workshop and why you should always order a new one.

• Removing wheel bearings: We use a special nut (or the appropriate special tool) to loosen the bearing lock.

• Preserving original parts: Why old brake drums are often better than their reputation.

When the damper is stuck: The "hard cut" method

The final enemy of this fork was the baked-on shock absorber bushing on the swingarm bolt. When heat and rust remover fail, only controlled force can help: We show you how to cut open the old shock absorber to save the valuable swingarm without damaging the material.

Conclusion: Preparation is everything

In the end, we have a bare, clean housing. All bearings - including the needle bearings in the swing arm - were safely removed using the "DIY method" (nut press). Now everything goes to powder coating and will soon be back in chic black.
