This is how we experienced the Vespa AlpDays 2021 in Zell am See
Thursday - Day 1 - The start (800km / 160km)
After thepreparations in Scooter Center, it was finally time to get started. The Vespa Alp Days start much earlier, but the main days are Friday and Saturday. Many people combine this scooter meeting in the Alps with a vacation and book the special trips to the mountains. We arrive on Thursday so that we can be fully involved on Friday and Saturday: After an early start in Cologne, the Scooter Center team, after about 650km, made a stopover at my place in Munich. Strengthened by a proper snack, Maryzabel's Platonika and Alex's MotoVespa were freed from the vans. We rode on the scooters in fantastic weather along fine country roads and over the legendary Sudelfeld and the Tatzelwurm, crossing the Inn at Kufstein and crossing the border into Austria. We continue past Walchsee, through the valleys via Saalfelden / Leogang to Zell am See!
In the meantime, Marc and Marcus took the vans on the fastest route to Zell am See. We were amazed when the stand was already set up when we arrived! We welcomed friends and old acquaintances from near and far. Together as a team, we quickly finished the remaining small jobs on the stand. This is followed by a convivial team evening with good food in Zell am See. As you can see, our weekend was off to a great start! But it was about to get even better:
Friday - Day 2 - Kitzbühler Horn (120km)
We decided to keep the stand closed in the mornings. During this time, all the Vespisti (we were also delighted to spot three Lambrettas) are out on the rides anyway and we prefer to meet friends and customers there in action. After a great breakfast, the scooters were refueled first. In bright sunshine, we drove together to Areit, the meeting point for today's ride to the Kitzbühler Horn. Amazing: a huge parking lot full of around 700 Vespa scooters, built from the early 1950s to the present day - what a wonderful spectacle! In 8 groups with a maximum of 100 scooters, we then set off at a leisurely pace along country roads and narrow paths up to the Kitzbühler Horn. The route was pure riding fun for some, while others worked up quite a sweat. I also observed riders who turned into runners and had to push their scooters up the extremely steep sections.
TIP:Did you already know about the height correction on the carburetor pans or air filter boxes? This small rubber plug is removed when the engine is running too rich on the mountain. With this additional air supply, the carburetor can draw in more air and no longer runs so rich due to the leaner air at altitude. Caution: Be sure to reinsert it in the valley, otherwise the Vespa will run too lean here!Largeframe example: Smallframe example:
The wonderful mountain panorama quickly made me forget the exertions for man and machine. On the descent, I was glad of my bgm PRO suspension and the new brake pads on my 1962 Vespa T4 from Augsburg. Other riders who were on the road today with a Vespa GTS told me about overheating and failing brakes due to the lack of an engine brake on the automatic engine. So at our Scooter Center stand was also very interested in our test-winning chassis from bgm PRO and Vespa GTS brakes from Frando and Porco Nero. So we opened our stand in the early afternoon and were able to welcome and advise a large number of friendly scooter riders. Many also tried their hand at our competition, and in the end there was a winner who was not that far off the correct result. However, we are not allowed to reveal this at this point, as we want to play the game again in the future with a similar number of nuts. For example, next weekend at the Scooter Center Open Day at our place in Bergheim-Glessen, just outside Cologne.
Saturday - Day 3 - Grossglockner (80km)
Today we had to get up early. The day was packed with attractions and started with goosebumps: 130 Vespa tubular handlebars and Faro Basso "Lampe Unten" Vespa models from the early 50s lined up for the Grossglockner Mountain Prize. This is a very rare opportunity to admire so many old Vespas in one place. At the spectacular Le Mans start in 4 groups, you can see the riders' mixture of excitement, pride, ambition and, above all, enjoyment of this challenge. "Tüte", a participant from last year, told me how he had to push his Vespa Rally 180 up the Glockner! How does a machine that has a few more years under its belt and less under the hood cope? To find out, we gave one of the daredevil pilots one of our cameras. Many thanks to Marc Schaffnit!
With the Ciao towards the summit
Our Marc has been on the road for a long time, he could hardly be stopped and first rides up the Grossglockner with his Ciao and then again with the Scooter Center Sei Giorni. Another practical test for our new CIAO bags, passed with flying colors. Shortly afterwards, we also set off for the Glockner, the mountain is calling and wants to be conquered!
It was supposed to rain all day today, but with the bgm PRO Sport tires I wasn't worried. We were lucky: it stayed dry until the afternoon, but it was very foggy and cold at the top of the Grossglockner. So after a fun descent, we went straight to the town square to welcome the AlpDays family to our stand and advise them on our products. In the afternoon it started to rain and we were so engrossed in conversations and trying to keep our stand dry that we unfortunately missed the fantastic Vespa acrobatics stunt show by NICOLA CAMPOBASSO. Instead, the "Concours de Elegance", a kind of custom show, took place right next to our stand. While the Alpdays family slowly gathered in the Congress Center to attend the evening program with live music, awards, honours, charity handover and raffle, we set about dismantling the stand and stowing the material safely in the vans. A group of ladies in dirndls from Waging am See stopped us briefly. A welcome and very nice change! After dinner, we also went to the evening event. Maryzabel was immediately involved and was allowed to dance with the WURLI WURM. Actually, everyone was just waiting for the big raffle, where the main prize was a Vespa Rally. Congratulations to the lucky winner, who was very happy! But we were also able to bring some joy and announce the winner of our competition, who can now look forward to a bgm PRO shock absorber for his scooter. In addition, three Scooter Center shopping vouchers worth 200 euros were raffled off. Congratulations once again to the lucky winners!
Journey home (800km / 160km)
The night was quite short. After breakfast together, we parted ways again: I headed back towards Munich with my Vespa, Marcus stayed a day longer to enjoy the countryside with Ciao and Vespa and Maryzabel, Marc and Alex set off on the 800km journey home towards Cologne/ Bergheim.
