Vespa engines from the Largeframe models with rotary valve intake control, such as Vespa VNA, VNB, VBA, VBB, VLA, GT, GTR, Sprint, Rally, PX, LML 2T, Bajaj Chetak, can now be easily converted:
After conversion, the formerly weak 6-volt electrical system is upgraded to powerful 12-volt lighting. The previously self-regulating electrical system is replaced with a reliable and bulb-saving regulator control (e.g., with BGM6690). The high-quality wiring ensures safe transmission of the high lighting and ignition power. With its strong wattage, it provides a very good light output even at idle, which does not drop even when using turn signals or additional power consumers. No maintenance required! Maintenance tasks, which are common with contact ignitions, are no longer necessary.
Our new bgm ignition: specially developed for converting contact-controlled engines to maintenance-free electronic ignition:
The latest version of the proven bgm PRO HP (High Power) ignition base plate for converting contact ignition to electronic ignition.
Compatible with Vespa Largeframe models like: VNA, VNB, VBA, VBB, GL, Super, Sprint, GT, GTR, TS, Rally
We have improved and made the proven bgm PRO Ignition Base Plate even better with our own brand bgm. Special attention has been given to very high-quality coils and the pickup.
Additionally, the wiring has been upgraded to textile-covered silicone cables. A special feature is the cord already attached to the cable bundle for easy insertion through the engine housing cable channel. The base plate also now features a degree-accurate scale for easier adjustment.
Compared to conventional electronic ignition, the BGM Pro HP V2.5 ignition base plate has specially combined coil windings.
This further improves the efficiency of the alternator and provides high lighting power with 120W.
Unlike a Vespa PX ignition base plate, the BGM Pro HP has a longer and differently routed cable branch to perfectly mount the ignition base plate on older vehicles. Additionally, it features a customized base plate contour to fit engines from before 1977 (with a larger crankshaft seal seat than PX).
NOTE: The bgm pickup has a nominal resistance of 100 Ohm (+/- 10 Ohm)
When converting from contact ignition to this base plate, the use of a different flywheel, voltage regulator, and CDI is necessary.
Any potentially old original voltage regulator will no longer be needed, just like the original ignition coil.
With the bgm voltage regulator BGM6690 , a battery (12V battery required) can be optionally charged during riding. The old wiring harness can still be used, but the previously separate circuits must now be combined, as the voltage regulator now only provides one connection for the complete power supply. An easier way is to convert to one of our conversion wiring harnesses (e.g., 9077011).
Everything needed for this is available individually or as a set.
The bgm ignition base plate fits all Vespa engines from the Largeframe models with rotary valve intake control, such as Vespa VNA, VNB, VBA, VBB, VLA, GT, GTR, Sprint, Rally, PX, LML 2T, Bajaj Chetak.
In addition to the ignition, you also need a few other parts to convert the engine from contact ignition to electronic ignition. We have put together a practical kit for you: BGM6661PRO
All parts are also available individually:PLEASE NOTE
The alignment of the crankshaft in the engine housing, and therefore also the position of the flywheel, is much more variable in the older Largeframe engines (identifiable by the same size crankshaft bearings with 25x62x12mm) compared to later PX engines.
The crankshaft bearings are not fixed in the engine housing by a circlip but sit only with a light press fit in the housing. Due to various tolerances (e.g., the width of the crankshaft seals, worn bearing seats, the orientation of the cone on the crankshaft), significant deviations from the originally intended position of the shaft in the crankcase can occur. For the ignition to work correctly, the flywheel must align precisely with the ignition base plate. Otherwise, the trigger surface in the flywheel will not be parallel to the pickup, which can cause ignition dropouts. If the ignition doesn't produce a spark, this is often the source of the problem. To easily fix this, we offer spacers (BGM8000S05) for the pickup on the ignition base plate. This will easily restore the correct distance.
