Why should I convert a Vespa to electronic ignition?

After the conversion, the formerly weak 6-volt on-board electrical system has a powerful 12-volt light output. The previously self-regulating electrical system is converted to a reliable and bulb-friendly regulator control (e.g. with BGM6690). The high-quality wiring ensures safe transmission of the high light and ignition output. With its high wattage, it ensures a very good light output even at idle speed, which does not drop when the indicators or additional power consumers are used.

No maintenance required! There is no need for maintenance work, as is usual with contact ignition systems.

bgm PRO ignition base plate

With our own brand bgm, we have revised the thousandfold proven bgm PRO ignition base plate and made it even better. Special attention was paid to the very high quality of the coils and the pickup.

In addition, the wiring has been changed to textile-coated silicone cables. A special gimmick is the cord already attached to the cable branch for easy feeding of the cable harness through the cable duct in the motor housing. The base plate now also has a graduated scale for easier adjustment.

Compared to a conventional electronic ignition, the BGM Pro HP V2.5 ignition base plate has specially combined coil windings. As a result, the efficiency of the alternator is significantly improved once again and offers a high light output of 120W.

In contrast to a Vespa PX ignition base plate, the BGM Pro HP has a longer and differently routed cable branch so that the ignition base plate can also be fitted perfectly to older vehicles. It also has an adapted base plate contour so that it fits perfectly on pre-1977 engines (with a larger shaft seal seat than PX).

Conversion to electronic ignition

When converting from a contact ignition to this base plate, it is necessary to use a different fan wheel, a voltage regulator and a CDI. An old voltage regulator, if fitted as standard, is no longer required, as is the standard ignition coil.

With the bgm voltage regulator BGM6690 can optionally be used to charge a battery (12 volt battery required) while riding. The old wiring harness can still be used, but the previously individual circuits must be combined, as the voltage regulator only provides one outlet for the complete power supply. It is easier to convert to one of our conversion wiring harnesses (e.g. 9077011).

PLEASE NOTE: Crankshaft positioning

The alignment of the crankshaft in the engine housing, and therefore also the position of the pole wheel, is significantly more variable on the old largeframe engines (recognizable by the same size crankshaft bearing with 25x62x12mm) than on the later PX engines, for example.

The crankshaft bearings are not fixed in the engine housing by a circlip, but simply sit in the housing with a slight press fit. Various tolerances can lead to significant deviations from the originally intended positioning of the shaft in the crankcase. For the ignition to work correctly, the pole wheel must be perfectly aligned with the ignition base plate. Otherwise, the trigger surface in the pole wheel will not run parallel to the pickup, which can lead to misfiring.

Solution: If the ignition does not produce a spark, the fault is usually to be found here. For a simple remedy, we offer spacer plates (BGM8000S05) for the pickup on the ignition base plate. This makes it easy to restore the correct distance.
