Electronic ignition YGROS RACE by VAPE for Vespa GS160 and SS180 - DC system
12V DC on-board power supply - battery supply - static (fixed) ignition timing
Principle: Lima current is fed into the battery via DC regulator - the on-board electrical system runs completely via direct current
Can also be converted for GS160/GS/4 with 6V battery ignition - as a complete system change to modern DC electrics
Mandatory: new wiring harness (central controller, battery logic, new consumer assignment)

Ignition YGROS RACE by VAPE - DC on-board power supply (battery) - Vespa GS160 (VSB1T) and SS180 (VSC1T)

This version of the YGROS ROAD by VAPE is designed as a 12V DC system: The entire current from the alternator is fed into a battery via a DC regulator - and from there the entire on-board electrical system is supplied with direct current. The conversion is somewhat more complex than a pure AC system, but provides noticeably more comfort and reserves for modern consumers.

Important: GS160 and GS/4 models with original 6V battery ignition can also be converted to this system - but always as a consistent change to a modern 12V DC electrical system. There is no "compatibility" with the original 6V DC concept.

YGROS ROAD VAPE 12V DC Battery operation Static ignition timing GS160 SS180

System principle (DC)

Lima → DC controller → Battery → Vehicle electrical system: complete supply via direct current.
Static ignition timing: set cleanly and flash off after installation.
Conversion possible for SS180 (magneto ignition) and GS160/GS/4 (also battery ignition) - as a complete system change.
Mandatory: new wiring harness, because the controller and battery logic are installed centrally.

Advantages in everyday use

Light intensitydoes not depend on engine speed as with classic AC systems.
Light even when the engine is not running (parking/parking light, workshop operation, breakdown).
More reserves thanks to battery buffer for DC consumers (LED headlights, USB, navigation system, charging ports).
Very comfortable setup for touring, everyday use and modern light/accessory upgrades.

Info box: Conversion effort (DC) - what is different from AC?

A DC on-board electrical system is technically more consistent, but also somewhat more complex: the controller charges the battery and all consumers are supplied via the battery. This means that the wiring has to be set up appropriately from the ground up.

New wiring harness: mandatory - old 6V wiring harnesses are neither suitable in terms of structure nor condition.
Battery + bracket: include (incl. fuse, earth points, charging cable).
DC consumers: ideal if you rely on LEDs and additional consumers.

In short: more work when setting up - but an on-board electrical system that feels "modern".

Infobox & tuning tip: GS160/GS/4 crankshaft cones (1st series vs. 2nd series)

There is an important design difference between the GS160 and GS/4: 1st series with a small cone (Ø19 mm) and 2nd series with a larger cone (Ø21 mm). The 21 mm cone corresponds to the level of the SS180 and is considered the more stable base.

Tip for engine overhaul: If you need a new crankshaft for a 1st series engine anyway, it is worth changing to the more stable 2nd series type with Ø21 mm cone.
Additional advantage: The 2nd series type typically uses a needle bearing instead of a bronze plain bearing bush on the small connecting rod eye - this is better suited to more demanding setups in terms of temperature and speed.

Note: For mixed components (engine/polewheel/cone), be sure to check the fit and flash the ignition timing after assembly.

GS/4 (all series) and GS160 (models with battery): originally 6V battery ignition - conversion to 12V DC only as a complete rebuild (wiring harness/logic).
GS160 (Italian models without battery): 6V breaker/magnetic ignition - conversion also possible, but also makes sense here with a new wiring harness.
SS180 (VSC1T): often with battery, but already conventional magneto ignition - this DC version refers to the conversion of the vehicle electrical system to 12V direct current.

Important: The aim is not "battery as original", but a modern 12V DC electrical system with central regulator and battery buffer.

Suitable for

Vespa GS160 (VSB1T, from chassis 00360098-)
Vespa SS180 (VSC1T)

Note: For GS160/GS/4, please also check the cone type (Ø19/Ø21). The DC conversion is always carried out with a new wiring harness and battery logic.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions (DC)

No. Even if both are called "DC", the structure and logic are completely different. The modern 12V DC system works with a central controller, battery charging and new consumer layout - a new wiring harness is mandatory for this.
More convenience: light is not dependent on the speed, you have light even when the engine is not running, and the battery provides reserves for DC consumers such as LED headlights, USB, navigation system or charging ports.
Yes, a little. You need a battery, fuse protection and a properly designed charging/supply logic. In return, you get an on-board electrical system that behaves much more modern.

Conclusion

The YGROS ROAD by VAPE - DC version is the comfort-oriented solution for GS160 and SS180: The complete Lima current is charged into a battery via a DC regulator and from there the on-board electrical system is supplied as 12V direct current. The conversion is more complex than AC, but offers clear advantages in terms of light, comfort and DC consumers. A new wiring harness is mandatory in any case - even for vehicles that originally already had a 6V battery ignition.
